I had an 82 that did similar things. I had to finish a couple of holes in reverse due to not running in forward. It is probably the lower crankcase seal. These motors scavenge vacuum off of the crankcase to run properly. The seal is inexpensive, it is just a little work to remove parts and split the case. After I fixed mine it ran like a champ so it was definitely worth it. A good way to check is to put it on some blocks and run the motor. Spray some carb cleaner or starting fluid around the crank, if you get a change then it would be your problem.

Good luck,

Chris

Oh and welcome to the site. Hopefully someone will move this to the Harley section so you get some more feedback.

Your leak is only created in forward, the engine spins the opposite way for reverse. These carts do not have a transmission so the motor reverses which will suck in air in forward if the seal is in fact bad.

Timing is also a factor. The engine has to be timed in forward and reverse. Set the points and timing and see if that helps. But from the sounds of it it also could be the forward or reverse switch. Check the wiring for the charging circuit only works in forward.

Hello, buzzmanc.... If a crank seal was going bad and it got better with it on blocks and a little starter fluid sprayed on it. Would it run pretty good for a few days and then pretty much 80% lock up once it went fully bad? Not sure if i am explaining correctly or not.

You wrote that you changed the forward lever to reverse while running. I am assuming this is a gas cart and if so that is a bad idea.
There are manuals for parts, service and operator on this forum that can be downloaded free. I have attached a picture from the operator manual re forward/reverse for gas carts.
Let me know if you cannot find the manuals (assuming you want to) and I can repost the link again.
Good luck
