Default 1979 harley project

Came across a run down '79 Harley Davidson Golf Cart on kijiji, offered the owner a 100$, and now I have a project to work on (and annoy my wife with). Anyhow, the previous owner said it ran years back, but they haven't used it for 4 or 5 years. He also said that he tried starting it last summer, but couldn't get it to run. My plan is first to see if if i can get it running. If it does run, i will use it for the summer then rebuild the motor and do the necessary bodywork over the next winter.

After initial inspection of the cart, here what i discovered:
1. Throttle cable is kinked
2. Choke cable is kinked.
3. Wrong spark plug
4. Air filter looked as though it had never been changed or cleaned.
5. Thick coat of grim pasted all around the carb, to the point where it was difficult to open throttle and choke.
6. Seats are absolutely rotten
7. Body is in pretty decent shape other then the passenger front fender which is half missing.
8. Plastic Bag rack is missing
9. Gas tank was littered with dirt and probably 2 cups of water.

I put a few drops of oil down the cylinder head and the cylinder seems to glide quite smoothly. Replaced spark plug with the right one. Changed the gas filter and line leading to the tank. Cleaned the tank out. Cleaned the carb off to make sure that i could at least manually adjust choke and throttle when starting. Bought a new air filter. I'm going to mix up some gas maybe a little rich and try to start it up this weekend.

Q's:

1. Anything else that i should check or do before I fire up the old hog?
2. Would a generic choke cable and generic throttle cable work to replace the two that busted?
3. I've also seen online a lot of Harley carts with orange / black fold down fishing seat. Anyone have an idea of where to find these seats?

Thanks,

Armand

Ps. I'll attach some pictures this coming weekend

I got one the same way (but free). All I had to do was clean out the tank and put a kit in the carb. Diaphram was shot.

RE: Throttle cable and no run.
There is an abundance of information already on this forum.
This Forum is searchable.
In your opinion; should existing forum members continue to answer the same old questions over and over again when the new participant could get the same or similar information by investing time and searching the forum?

The throttle cable works backwards.
It holds the throttle closed. The spring is both upon the carb and under the drivers floorboard.

There are manuals in this forum for free download.

Good Luck

Well, got everything straightened out. Tried firing the cart up, but it wouldnt draw any fuel at all. I suspect the pump diaphram shot, and was going to rebuild the carb, but the cost of shipping the kit to sask, cnd. was about twice the cost of the rebuild kit. I happened to stumble upon a new carb and bought it for 80 shipped. Going to put it in tomorrow, i have the old carb removed, is there anything i should do before bolting on the new carb?

Thanks ,

Armand
