Symptoms of crank case seals??
Hello all newb here. I have had my harley cart for about 7 years love the thing it runs just good enough to keep me hooked lol! Its a 1976 4 wheel cart. Ok here's my question what symptoms to look for if it is crank case seals? The cart is starting better than it ever has in forward and reverse. You don't even have to choke it even first time in the morning. It will run good first 50 yards then it just like it will not open all the way up or it just cuts out and sputters and never reaches top end. Runs good down hill but will barley pull itself up an incline sometimes it won't. I'm lost timing is good and points and condenser are new I ran it without muffler still same. Here's a weird thing jacked it up last night and ran it a bit did same thing left it on jack and went in this morning and gas all over the floor! At least 10 bucks worth lol which ain't much these days. The back tires were only about 4 to 5 inches off ground not real bad. Didn't get to look at it real close but it looked like it leaked out around the head gasket or base of jug will look tomorrow for sure or could have came from crank seals. Any suggestions on what to try or look for would be greatly appreciated! Thanks folks

Re: Symptoms of crank case seals??
It sounds to me like you need to re-build your carburetor. Make sure that you replace the float and the needle valve that the float operates, even though they may look OK when you take them out. The rest of the carburetor rubber parts and gaskets are also likely due for replacement, so do a complete re-build and replace all of them.
Over time the floats loose their buoyancy and sit lower in the fuel. This causes the level of fuel in the carburetor bowl to be higher and the engine to run like it is partially choked. Since the level of fuel is higher it is also closer to the bowl vent, so lifting the cart will cause fuel to run out of the vent. Charley |

Re: Symptoms of crank case seals??
Just a quick shot in the dark but I think it may be starving for fuel when RPM is higher. I don't think your 1976 engine has a float bowl carb. Most of the ones I have seen have a Tillotson with an internal fuel pump. I would check fuel lines, carb mounting gaskets, and the reed valve gaskets. Just my guess!

Re: Symptoms of crank case seals??
Ok thanks guys I'm fixin to go take a gander at her the carb was rebuilt about 4 or 5 years ago it is a tilston carb so I think it has the fuel pump its probably do again. The gas tank is old there is an extra hole in the top like a vent or pressure valve was there whatever is there now is broke off and has a tiny hole in it but has been that way since I have had it. As for crank seals if they were bad would it start that easy? Thanks guys I appreciate the input!

If the crank seals were bad it probably would be very hard to start depending on how bad they were.

Re: Symptoms of crank case seals??
Ok. I checked the fuel lines and they are very flimsy. I think maybe they might be collapsing on top end and that's why it's starving for fuel. Good call tew45 I had a cheap siphon hose with a primer bulb that we put on it it was to big but clamped it down on tank and carb and it topped out ran good for a few minutes then bulb came apart lol. I'm gonna get new fuel line tomorrow any suggestions and does anybody know what size to get and what fuel filter to try. Thanks again I will keep you posted!

Re: Symptoms of crank case seals??
I don't have the measurements tonight but I think a 1/4 ID hose will fit with clamps. Use an inexpensive inline fuel filter. I use the $1.00 filters. They seem to work well.

Re: Symptoms of crank case seals??
Ok I got 1/4 from Oreilys last night and cheap filter 1/4 matched what was on it. It made a huge diffrence cart is running way better but still not 100%. There must be something missing from the part that goes in the tank that was bigger than 1/4 I made it fit but it was just a straight piece of tubing from the knuckle 3/8 was stamped on knuckle I don't know what part goes on it also where the pickup line goesin the tank what is suppose to hold it in? I keep gettin these rubber grommets to make a snug fit but the gas eats them up in no time. Anybody got a pic or micro fish of breakdown of parts? Thanks for the help I was gonna put fuel supply last on list to check saved me a lot of time and headache!

Re: Symptoms of crank case seals??
There is an ell fitting that fits in the top of the tank with a grommet that closes the top of the tank. A line runs into the tank from the ell with a check valve on it. The other small hole in the tank is a breather. You can buy the OEM fitting that replaces the ell and grommet but it is expensive. Just make your own type of ell fitting and you should be good.
