1977 hd golf cart
have a 1977 hd golf cart and have had problems with the ignition coil. figured i used the wrong coil, i finally got the right one. but after running for about 10 rounds it wouldnt run in forward but would run in reverse. so i drove it to the club house and it would barely run in reverse now. My ignition coil is mounted right beside my engine cylinder. I was wondering if maybe the heat from the cylinder is ruining my coil. Has anyone else had this problem? and if so what did you do to correct it? Thank you for ur time

Re: 1977 hd golf cart
What is the spark like?
Hard to explain in words that which is born from visual experience. Good spark is white to blue white and will jump up to one inch or so. Bad spark is orange/yellow and will not jump very far. Re Reverse and not forward....Check your timing in both forward and reverse. The procedure is covered in past posts numerous times. Good luck PS: have you downloaded the manual? |

Re: 1977 hd golf cart
I just had to replace my coil. I had bought an Accel coil which needed an external resistor. It ran good for about 2 weeks until I was driving home from my clubhouse and it started surging and cutting out. It felt like a fuel problem, but before checking that, I decided to check point gap and change to my old condensor which didn't help. I had bought a new Chrome coil which included the mounting bracket and resistor . Put that on which worked and the power was tremendous. Check your points ,condensor, gap, timing in forward and reverse and wiring. Then check your coil resistance, primary and secondary. Check your plug wire resistance and change your plug. All took me about 3 hrs but the results were worth it. If you need the specs for testing and adjusting, reply and I will get them from my manual in my garage. I moved my coil to protect it from the heat plus my modified frame post was hitting the coil under full acceleration. My cart is a modified 1977 D4.

Re: 1977 hd golf cart
The new coils made in China leave a lot of room for quality improvement. You can use both types of auto coils just as HD did. One they used was one that did not require an external resistor and one that did. Any 12 volt point system coil will work. I am using a 1972 Honda 350 coil now. It had been buried in a ditch for 20 years. Works great! In other words a point ignition system is a point ignition system. Also short coil life can be caused by excessive voltage (too much current for the coil to handle)
