1971 Harley Davidson Starter/Generator Belt replacement
I just purchased a 1971 Harley Davidson 3-wheel golf cart that is missing a starter/generator belt. I purchases a replacement online and it broke on me as I was trying to put it on. Does anyone have any advice on how to put the belt on? Do you have to loosen anything first?
Thanks |

Re: 1971 Harley Davidson Starter/Generator Belt replacement
Getting the "correct" (exact size) starter/generator belt is difficult to near impossible because the particular "width" belt is no longer manufactured. Any OEM belt will likely be old and questionable in strength/durability... most are simply the closest available replacement. Add to that that these old carts have worn or sloppy pivot points... making pulley alignment dubious at best.
I had trouble keeping starter/generator belts on my '74... breaking one, two or three a year. The "spring" tensioner was the biggest problem... it simply puts way too much stress on the (availible) belts. I removed it and made a threaded, manually adjusted tensioner... I haven't broken a starter/generator belt since, but as the belt stretches and wears I do have to adjust it a tiny bit once or twice a year. |
