Wrong Carb?
So I order up a rebuild kit for the carb for a 1985 DX4 that I am restoring. The kit arrives and the parts don't match up. A close inspection reveals that my cart has a Mikuni BV18 carb on it. After doing some research, it looks like this carb is mostly associated with 1982-1987 E-Z-Go carts.
Would anyone happen to know if this carb will work for me? There is a rebuild kit available for it but I don't want to get it unless I know it will work. Should I be thinking about getting a different carb altogether? |

Re: Wrong Carb?
That's the $100 dollar question.
I got this cart, literally, from the scrap heap. Put in a new top end, rebuilt the starter /gen, added an electric fuel pump, 100% new wiring, new points / condenser, and got her timed right. It actually runs now which was no small task. However, I am only getting a couple of miles an hour. Admittedly, I didn't do any work with the carb as I wanted to see where I was at with all the other work getting done. Now that I am ready to troubleshoot why I am only getting 2-3 mph I thought I would rebuild the carburetor as a start. This is when I discovered that this carb isn't original. As long as you think it will work I will strip it and clean it real well and see where that gets me. Any others ideas are GREATLY appreciated. |

Re: Wrong Carb?
Have you checked the clutches? A frozen drive clutch will not let the engine run up.

Re: Wrong Carb?
I haven't considered anything with the transmission but, given how other things were frozen on this cart (cables, brake assembly) it stands to reason that this could be the issue.
I will tear it down, clean up it, put it back together and see it that does the trick. |

Re: Wrong Carb?
Update. Got a NEW Mikuni BV18 for all of $40 from a local small engine mechanic. I installed it and the speed still isn't there. The engine really seems to be humming well though.
While running the engine with the rear wheels off the ground the floating flange is moving forward nicely under load. However, t looks like the driven clutch spring isn't collapsing at all while under load. I am assuming that a new driven clutch is in the works? Are there any ways to test to know for sure? |

Re: Wrong Carb?
Disassemble it and repair it. It should be less than a totally new assembly.
