Default 78 harley trying to get more mph

Hi everyone I'm trying to do a little bit of modification to get the most speed out of my cart. I got a lot of wide open fields to run it on.

So far what I've done is got the .30 over piston and head and gasket matched the ports, put new points and condensers on it. Removed the governor.

Basically what im at now is I was reading that putting an expansion chamber on it, but I have nothing to go on for the specs.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks.

you can get a 2-3 mph by changing to bigger tires. You should have plenty of torque to turn them.

Yeah I forgot to mention that I just put tires on it, haha. I got 21" in the back now.

I was reading also that an electric fuel pump can help. Pretty much looking for someone thats done some stuff to them before and knows what adds the most power.

I had a 3-wheeler with 21"(or 22") tires in the back. It made it as fast as I would want to go on a 3-wheeler. It wasn't really lacking any power but there was an rpm limit. I'm not sure what can be done to speed that up.

Ever consider a different carburetor?

I am getting about 20-22 mph (gps reading) on an '80 and an '85. The only two mods I have are that I am using Mikuni BV-18 carbs on both (you can still get these new for under $75) and I added an electric fuel pump. I think Mikuni makes several models that will work on HD carts, BV-23(?) or BV-24(?).

The Mikuni carbs are the same ones used on early 80's EZ Go carts. They don't contain the internal fuel pumps so they can't be installed without also adding an external fuel pump. I like these carbs as they are pretty much "solid state" meaning they have no internal parts that can wear out.

Fuel pump directions are here:

That's a good question. I found them on Amazon for $40 each but I don't see them there now though. Let me look around a bit.

They are still on Amazon. I don't want to link to an external site but if you go there and search for this you'll find them:

E-Z-GO 20071G1 Carburetor for BV18-15-303

If you go this route you will need to switch the choke lever on the new carb from one side to the other (simple, they are designed to do this) and re-route your cart's choke cable accordingly.

Hey Lochlin, do I need to make any modifications to the stock carb just to put the electric fuel pump on or can I just put it in line and wire it up.
