New Points, now no spark
Help!? I have a 68 harley tree wheel golf cart. I pulled her out this spring and ran okay. I was planning on listing it for sale.... It was running okay, but thought of tuning it up for sale and decided to put on new points and condenser.
I drove the cart out of the garage 5 feet, lifted the cover, replaced the points and condenser... Zero spark. I made sure points are set at .22... No spark I made sure the no wires were touching from points to engine... No spark. In case I got a bad point set or condenser I put on the old set.... No spark Doused the entire cart in gasoline and tried to ignite lighter to burn the entire cart to the ground.... No spark. (Lol) Any ideas? |

Re: New Points, now no spark
Grounding to the point cover plate is most common. Remove the point cover plate and test for spark.
Good luck |

Re: New Points, now no spark
Do you have an OHM meter to check the wire continuity from coil to points?
Do you have 12V at + side of coil? |

I have a meter, but are there instructions you can point to, to do what you suggest?

Re: New Points, now no spark
Sorry, no I do not.
Also, I just tried to type some and came up short. I would look closely at thE wire from the coil to the points though as it may be grounding out. If it grounds out the result is the same as the points not opening. When the points open, the coil sparks to the plug. |

Re: New Points, now no spark
To clarify, when you say you are getting no spark the starter is turning, right? Just want to make sure nothing is getting lost in the lingo.
You may want to check your motor ground too? As I have 2 80s models I am not real knowledgeable on those older carts but I am assuming there is a grounding strap that goes from the motor to the frame like on newer carts. If it's not that and, in fact, your starter is turning I don't how it can be anything other than plug or coil. As I recall, there are only 4 things on that part of the circuit: points, condenser, coil, spark plug (5 if you count wiring). It's gotta be one of those. |

Re: New Points, now no spark
Hey guys, been traveling quite a bit. Still no spark. Is there a chance the resistor went bad all of a sudden? I used meter and seems like I am greeting current from resistor, but no spark at points... It is not grounding out. Just no spark. I have tried 2 points sets and condensers. Gosh I wish I knew how to trouble shoot with meter....
