Default Low Voltage

Hi all,
I have a 73D gasser with a charging issue. I have searched the forum and still confused when I do a charging test I am only getting 11.6 volts out of the system. I did try to adjust the voltage regulator as indicated in instructions that I found on line, no change. The starter/generator seems strong & I have no starting issues. Could it be that the brushes need replaced in the starter/generator or maybe he voltage regulator is shot. Any ideas?? THANKS

Update: I pulled the brushes of the starter / generator and they look fine. The manual recomends replacing when 1/2" long, mine were still at 3/4" Got the battery on a seperate charger to make sure it is 100% @ 85% right now. Once again this thing has me scratching my head

Thanks Craig. I have the battery at 100% now & will try the tests again. I no luck I will have the battery load tested. Wiring has been gone over but going to check it all again. Guess what I will be doing the next couple evenings lol.

Put a test meter across the battery, one rear wheel off the ground, run at a fast rate and reading on the volt meter should read around 14 to 15 volts. If it doesn't do the checks outlined in the manual. My guess will be the battery or regulator.

Thanks for the input Tew. I put the battery on a charger to make sure it was 100% When I put the meter across the terminals and start the cart on jack stands at full throttle it maintains 12V but never gets above that. I did find some info on-line about the regulator and tried to adjust it per instructions. No change in voltage. I am going to run the full test in the manual over the weekend. BTW everything on the cart is new with the exception of the starter/generator and voltage regulator. Wish me luck. THANKS guys

Be sure and check your wiring for proper ground and be sure it is correct!

Even though you can adjust them, those voltage regulators still go bad. My neighbor's 76 was cranking out 11-12v. I put a new voltage regulator and it went straight to 14v.

IT'S FIXED! After many checks it seems that the problem was a weak ground between the battery and frame. After fixing that the regulator was pushing almost 17 volts because I tried to adjust it in an earlier test. Re-adjusted the regulator to about 14.5 volts and I was back on the road again the cart even runs smoother it seems (or maybe I just think it does) Guess this proves sometime I think to hard about what the problem may be. THANKS for all the guys

Yup! I'm guilty sometimes as well. Maybe I should get "check the simplest thing first" tattooed inside my eyelids.
