Carb issues
A friend and I are still knee deep in a 64d rescue/resurrection. We have climbed many hurdles but our final hurdle before we are off and running is fuel related. We had determined that we are not getting any fuel into the cylinder, as indicated by a bone dry spark plug. I bought a gasket kit for the carb, disassembled it, soaked it in carb cleaner, blew air through it, the needle moves freely, the inlet cover plate has fuel in it when I remove it, but i'm still not getting anything into the cylinder. I have also taken the carb off and watched the reeds open and close while the engine is turning over. I'm am absolutely stuck. Please help!

Re: Carb issues
I was at that point once. The problem turned out to be a clogged port that runs through the reed plate, through the intake manifold, that drives the pump on the carb. With the gaskets properly installed in the carb, no air leaks in the fuel lines/filter, it should be working. IF the port is clogged, the pump will not work! I used a gasket sealer for the reed plate and carb gaskets. This can be done but just a very slight film! I clogged it the first time replacing the gaskets.
Good Luck. |

Re: Carb issues
thats a good start.wrong gasket and you've plugged the vaccum hole. might just need a prime. use a spray bottle and spray into the intake and try running it.

Re: Carb issues
I've got the gaskets on correctly, I've reviewed it about a dozen times now and have even check out a rebuild video on YouTube. Before I replaced the gasket's I wasn't even getting fuel into the carb, at least now there is fuel in it, as if you take the inlet cover off, there is a bunch in there. I've followed it's path down through the plates and gaskets, it's getting to the needle, but I don't know what happens from there. So close yet so far.

Re: Carb issues
I've just finished watching another rebuild video. I have made a correlation between the videos and my manual. I notice early models like mine, the fulcrum and needle don't fit together, whereas later models the fulcrum has a slot on the end of it that the needle fits into, so when the fulcrum moves it moves the needle with it. Can anyone explain to me what difference it makes?

Re: Carb issues
Sometimes the pump just needs to be primed. disconnect the gas line to the carb and Use another line to the carb and fill it with fuel and maybe some pressure to it. I used to have prime problems with some pumps and I used an outboard bulb pump to prime with. Just an Idea, might be worth a try!

Re: Carb issues
Not sure which carb you are working on but Mikuni's and several others have an injector tube in the main body pickup underneath the main jet .It screws out and has several small orifices in it .Air from blowing it out will not clear it .You have to remove it and clean each hole in it using guitar string etc .blow through it with carb cleaner ,then air .The engine will not pick up fuel if this is clogged .

Re: Carb issues
I thought that cart had a Tillotson with a side mounted fuel pump. The Tillotson has to be primed sometimes. I don't think the Mikuni or the Keihin has to be primed at all.

Re: Carb issues
It is a Tillotson, I didn't have a primer bulb laying around, but can pick one up just to have around the garage. I did however use a spray bottle as suggested and have determined that my timing is way off - so that could play a part in this ordeal. Working on that tonight - will post back.

Re: Carb issues
Timing is often an issue on the point system used on the HD / Columbia engine since the last two generations have been using the electronic ignition systems. I always suspect timing is a problem but I also hate to keep harping on timing. There several posts on the forum explaining the procedure. I still use an outboard pump to prime with after a fuel system rework.
