Default Crankshaft Removal?

Guys, the fan-side crank bearing on the '85 blew over the weekend. The son-of-a-gun had been running great too. Oh well. Rather than cry about it, I towed it home from the camp and got after it. I have the engine split and can clearly see the shot bearing (see pics).

How the heck do I get the bearing out of the fan side of the case? For that matter, how the heck does the crank come out of that side of the motor casing to even get to the bearing? Is this a shop job only? I don't want to beat on the thing and cause damage.

According to my manual (see pic, I marked the bearing that is bad), there are some retaining rings in there but I can't get to them with the shaft in the way. I know my way around these carts ok but this is uncharted territory for me.

Have you split the case and pulled the crank assembly?

Case is split. Removing the crank assembly was the part I was hung up on. It wouldn't come out easily and I didn't want to "heat and beat" on it and maybe hurt something. I took it to the machine shop a couple of days ago and they said that they are going to have to press the old bearing out then press the new bearing in.

While I have the motor apart I am going to replace both bearings, even though only one is bad.

Sorry, I keep forgetting some of us do not have basic shop equipment or access to some friends shop tools. I have a small hydraulic jack press that I made myself for use when needed. Your crank and bearing should not need much pressure to remove and not much to install. Good luck with the repair!

Thanks Tew. That's pretty much what I figured.

I gave the whole assembly to my machine guy. He told me that the primary collar / spacer was much fused onto the shaft and he had to put a pretty good amount of force onto to it to get it separated. He got it apart though. Again, this cart sat idle for well over a decade before I got it. As you know, no use is no good.

A supplier sent me the incorrect bearing (too big) so I am awaiting the proper one to arrive and I should be able to get this thing back together.

While this cart is all torn apart I figured I would do a full rebuild on it with a new piston and cylinder. I think the old ones are still functional but what the heck, might as well go with new.

Good Idea! Save the old piston & parts for emergency use.
