Default Tires to fit my '76 D

I could never figure out how this works, but what tire sizes fit the wheels on my cart? What is standard and are there other optional sizes for more ride height, traction etc..

Thanks,
Mike

Standard tire size is 18x850-8. I have tried 10 inch and 12 inch wheels but the HD cart engine is not strong enough to pull them like I wanted. I gained top end speed as long as I was going down hill but low end was sad. Stay with the standard size or fit s more powerful engine. The standard setup will run 20 MPH if in good condition and is plenty fast for that cart. I can't believe it would be safe at a higher speed!

The front tire in my 1972 D was a 18X9.5-8. It is slighty wider than the rear 18X8.5-8. I just changed the tire and it was original with the molded Harley name.

I see modern tires seem to have a larger number in the middle. Is that still inches or is it MM? So is a 18-950-8 the same as a 18-9.5-8? Or are we looking for something like a 18-240-8? The 240 being MM which is roughly 9.5 inches.

That chart didn't help much, I'm still confused.

Is it really easy and I am missing something?

Of course once I figure out the size thing I still have to decide what tread to get. The cart that needs tires has the original basically smooth ones. I was thinking of getting a 'turf' tread so that a slight amount of sand or mud does not leave me stranded. One of my cart has what look like trailer tires with a highway tread on em which is about the same as the smooth ones on a cart.

The center number being the width of the tire are mostly the same as 9.50 and 950 are equal but the 8.50 or 850 are an inch narrower. Anyway that has been the way it seems to me. Also check out Sam's specialty tires on the net. Some cart tires are $36.00 to $37.00 delivered. Other sizes and types tires are there also. You might find something suitable.

Also the Franklin golf car co. has knobbies and bar tread tires that will fit most carts. A little pricey but from what I have seen still reasonable and spend enough and freight is free.

Thanks for your help. Just scored some used garden tractor tires for 20 bucks. You are right, 20 mph is plenty for this machine. Thanks again, Mike

Ya 20 is a lot, especially if you have a 3 wheeler. They don't actually fully tip over easily but they start to go and you think they are going and that is where you get hurt and crash into things. When I first got my 3 wheeler I took a turn real hard on flat ground and stuck my foot down as it started to tip. Dang near broke by ankle and fell of the cart which then would have crashed into something. Now I only let people I really know drive the 3 wheeler, the 'newbies' get the 4 wheeler.
