Crankshaft Re-Assembly Question
I recently replaced both crankshaft bearings on the '85. This is the first time I have worked on the bottom part of the engine to this extent and I just want to make sure I am on the right page:
I reassembled the engine yesterday: put the case back together, new oil seals, put the fan back on, etc. While I was at it I put in a new piston / rings / cylinder as well. For the record, I had a machine shop do the actual bearings. Question: when I put everything together I found that the entire motor seems a bit more "tight" then when I took it apart. When I say "tight" I mean that it takes a bit more force to turn the motor now than before the rebuild. The motor turns just fine, it just feels a bit tighter. I am assuming things will break in a bit once this thing gets running but would like some assurance. Does this seem about right? I am very confident that I reassembled everything the right way but if I am off-base I would rather deal with it now rather than after I put the motor back into the cart. |

Re: Crankshaft Re-Assembly Question
Did you check the "end gap" of the new rings in the cylinder?

Re: Crankshaft Re-Assembly Question
Yep. I have done a lot of rings in the past. Never anything with the crankshaft though.
To be honest, it seems like the new oil seals tightened things up. My hunch is that they need broken in a bit. The rubber on those is pretty stiff Again, the motor turns fine . Just a bit tighter than before. |

Re: Crankshaft Re-Assembly Question
Did you have the proper end play on the crank shaft? I will have a post of my own on crank end play tonight!

Re: Crankshaft Re-Assembly Question
Yeah, I think it was just in my head. I mounted the motor last evening and I can turn the motor via the fan with a finger. I think we're good.

Re: Crankshaft Re-Assembly Question
You should be all good, I did a complete rebuild on my 74 D model, this winter, and had the same result's. Nice and tight, been running my sense late June, no issues, with the motor, cranks fine, I believe when you do the extensive of work, on the lower half its going to be a bit tight.
