Default New carb kit really makes my cart purr

My 1972 D has now been inch by inch gone through and it runs like a top. Used starter generator, rebuilt leaky clutch is sealed now, top end with .050 piston/rings, new drive belt, new starter/generator belt and original tensioner installed, used blem battery, muffler re-enforced and sealed, new front tire, tune-up kit (plug, points, condenser, fuel and air filter) but it would occasionally cut out like it was acting lean. So it was time to do the last thing on the list and that was to rebuild the carb. I got the kit that included the new black diaphragm. The 2 bolts that held the carb to the manifold were loose and that might have been the lean issue but non the less after I cleaned and install most of what was in the kit, the cart fired right up. I thought it would be cranking for awhile but it really surprised me when it fired up fast with no gas in the carb at all. The cart is smooth at all power settings now. Dang, I hope I don't jinx something!

Congrats! Sounds like you've done a lot of work.

I rebuilt the carb on my 76 D in an attempt to stop a slow leak. Cart runs really nice now, but it's still leaking when I stop. It drips down off the bottom of the carb. It's driving me nuts trying to figure out where the leak is coming from. I put a shut-off in the gas line that works for now, but I need a better solution long-term, as of now when I park the cart I have to lift the body up and shut off the gas while it leaks on the driveway/garage floor.

What I have seen on those carbs is that at some point in history someone way overtightened the screws so the threads kinda started to pull up and out. This leaves a high spot plus bends the 'cover' part down so you end up with gaps all around. A little careful work with a large fine fine or emery cloth on glass will usually fix em up.

I'm having the same issue , kinda, sorta. Mine leaks just after shut off, only drips a couple times, then stops. It only starts dripping again after its been run again. Doesn't the gasket solve the possibility that the threads have been over tightened? Is there any other issues that may cause it to leak?

The gasket is pretty thin so it really can't deal with the abuse.

There is not much gas in those carbs so there is not a lot to leak out.

Mine definitely leaks more than a couple of drops. It's a pretty steady stream, but I've never waited long enough to see how long it takes to stop.

Does gas accumulate inside the plastic cover while it's running? I'm thinking maybe the plastic was overtightened at some point and it's leaking from there.

Under that plastic cover is the largest volume of fuel in those carbs. The rest of those things there is not much space. If you have much of a leak at that plastic thing that could effect a lot of things since that is the suction side. I suppose the suction could be keeping it tight while its running?

Thanks 73eldo,
looks like the carb is coming back off, for a few minor adjustments, hopefully to get the leak resolved. smkummer, do you have any pics of your 72 D cart you can post?? Always like to see what these carts use to look like before the rust and dirt got to them. I posted a few after completing mine, check them out. good luck.
