Tillotson Adjustments
I just rebuilt the carb on my 71 model D. (HL231B) I ran a quick search but didn't find quite what I needed, so I have a couple questions.
I only see one actual place to adjust, the "T" style handle up top, correct? How many turns out should I set this screw to start? Thanks in advance. |

Re: Tillotson Adjustments
OK, put the entire thing all together today and mixed up brand new non-ethanol fuel at 85:1. Put on new air and fuel filter, new gasket between air intake and carb, new reed plate gasket, rebuilt the carb, new spark plug, and still the same problems!!! I'm running 2 full turns out on the adjustment screw to get it to run "alright" but it falls on its face in forward and reverse equally unless you just ease into the throttle. What could be left??? Could the little bit of play in the throttle shaft and worn throttle plate cause THAT much of an air problem? Does a plugged muffler make one do that?

Re: Tillotson Adjustments
I'm not sure about if its possible your getting to much air with the lose throttle shaft, But I know a plugged or blocked muffler can cause a big loss of power, if you can get it to run at all. I have had to replace the throttle shaft return spring, but the shaft was fairly tight. I experienced power loss, and after a couple days wouldn't run at all, I replaced my muffler , and now runs fine. Just a thought.

Re: Tillotson Adjustments
I'm thinking that may be part of the issue, but when you step on the throttle to go it'll act like it wants to go for a second, then die and just spin all day on the starter. The choke will help it though, which leads me to think either not enough fuel (don't know how, rebuilt carb and all new filter, lines, and gas in tank) or too much air (only place I can think of is around the throttle shaft). I guess maybe crank seals could be bad, but I'm not sure how to get at those to check, plus I really don't think so cause it runs just as well and starts just as easily in both directions. I'm probably going to try the throttle shaft and plate first, the muffler is more expensive.

Re: Tillotson Adjustments
Well if it is the crank seals, the only way to check them is crack open the crank case. If it was running, and you have to choke it even after the motor has warmed up, then its definitely the seals. Is you new fuel filter a clear plastic, so you can see the fuel? If so and fuel is present, air could be your enemy. a good seal helps that Tillotson pump that fuel. The process of elimination is a good way to go when your not sure of the problem, and I would always start that process with the cheapest. Sorry not much help.

Re: Tillotson Adjustments
One other thing I'm thinking is the reed plate, did you have a chance to inspect it while the carb was off ? That reed valve and those 8 little petals allows the fuel mix to get to the engine. I think it enters on the up stroke opening the reeds, and close on the downward stroke. Those little plates are pretty flexible , if one or more of the petals are slightly bent, that can cause a reduced fuel air mix into the piston chamber. That would also cause a loss of torque, and horsepower. Just another thought.

Re: Tillotson Adjustments
You know, when I had the entire intake off the thing right at first I looked at the reeds and remembered wanting to pull off the plate and really look close at them, then I didn't cause I think I remember the plate being on there pretty well, so I didn't fool with it. Then about a week went by while I waited for parts and until now I didn't remember the reeds. I put it all back together today and never even looked - I'll pull it all apart and check, cause now that you mention it I do think I remember seeing a little gap between a couple of the petals and the plates...

Re: Tillotson Adjustments
93yellowclubcar, if you find that you have a bent pedal , I'm not sure but it may need to be replaced. Trying to bend it back doesn't always work, you could try it though. If it has a site crease, you most likely need to replace. that little leaf spring needs to seat against that reed plate to stop blow back into your nice rebuilt carburetor. Good Luck
