heres where Im at... help
so as I said in my post a few days ago I ordered a new carb from ebay. Not a genuine tillotson but seems to be a knockoff brand but seems exact. So since Ive had the cart I put new points and condenser in, new plug, fuel filter, throttle cable, and now carb. So I put the carb on tonight, dumped some fuel into the fuel filter to prime it and started her up. It started right up! No choke even! Im a genius, I should do this for a living! Nope! So Im all excited, I open the barn door to take it for a test run with my daughter back it out and start to go forward. BTW its smoking bad, just figured maybe it was burning up some Kroil or carb cleaner or something that could have got in there, but when I go forward there is really no power. It drives maybe ten feet, and struggles at that and just loses all power. Wait 30 seconds do it again and get another ten feet. Did this to get it back to barn. Same in forward and reverse. Pulled plug out and it was wet and black. Not burn black like carbon but just oily black, you could wipe it off with rag. I started this new carb setting at 3/4 turn out. Wich way should I take my adjustment now? Its running too rich right? Do I screw adjustment in? I have read through all 35 pages of this subforum tonight to check for topics that may be related to my issue. From what Im gathering it is either a timing issue or a fuel/carb issue. I checked and cleaned reeds, none bent and seat pretty tight. I made all new gaskets and lightly sealed them with non hardening gasket sealer. I made sure and triple sure not to block the vacuum holes in gaskets and carb. All seems tight as far as that goes. This cart ran pretty good when I got it a month ago. The reason for my "tune up" was that you had to run the cart at half choke for a pretty good amount of time to get it to run properly. Does not seem to have a problem pulling fuel, has good measured compression (100psi) and same fuel in it as it did when it ran before. I think I have my timing down as I set it how I read on these forums and the you tube video. Again it starts right up just no power. Also did not need any choke to start. Guessing Im running rich? How do I lean it out if thats the case and can you lean it out too much and damage engine? All help would be appreciated. My seven year old daughter is driving me crazy asking for rides! Almost wish I had not even messed with it and just ran it the way it was but I didnt know or think that my wife would be able to get the feel of having to feather the choke while driving it.

Screwing your mixture screw out (counter clockwise) should add fuel. Screwing it in (clockwise) should lessen it.
A wet plug doesn't necessarily mean you are getting too much fuel though. It could just as easily mean that the plug isn't firing at just the right time and there is residual fuel in your cylinder as a result. Personally, I have had zero luck timing my carts via the posted methods. Trial and error is the only thing that has worked for me. I would make small timing adjustments to see if that helps. It can take awhile to get it just right and the results can be dramatic. The excessive smoke I would chalk up to the cart not being run in awhile. It will probably go away after that cart runs a bit. |

It does sound like to have all the basics covered.
I too have had the best luck tweaking the timing by making small adjustments till it performs well in both directions. Maybe jack it up and run it for a few minutes at a moderate speed to try and burn off what ever may have built up? |

I have to agree with Lochlin, and 73eldo, with the timing check, little adjustments maybe all it needs. That's a good way to start, by tweaking the timing. My cart is set to the manufacturers specs on timing, and runs nice, I'm just lucky on that I guess. Another thought is after trying the timing adjustments, and it doesn't improve, try removing the muffler, and see if it all out runs, its gonna get loud. My thought is a block muffler, possibly , and that is how I was able to determine that mine was blocked, plus you did state it was smoking bad.

Im not sure what is going on. I played with it again tonight. Swear I have the timing correct, even moved it all around while trying to run it with same results. I think Im going to go back to the old original carb tomorrow and see what I get as Im at a loss. Even tried the original spark plug. The points I put in are the brand that was recommended on here. I also replaced the condenser. Should I try the original condenser? I cant think that it would be a plugged muffler as it literally ran decent before I messed with it. Dont see how it would clog up on its own but may be something too look at. I took the original carb apart tonight and cleaned it. On the bottom of the carb where the bottom of the throttle shaft is there is play in shaft. There is a good 1mm or so. I cant tell if the aluminum casting was originally like this or it wore out that much. The choke shaft has no play in it like that.

I got the cart running. I took apart the brand new aftermarket carb that I bought on ebay and found a little disc by the float needle laying loose in bottom of carb. On the original tillotson carb I think this disc thats mechanically pressed in is brass colored. This one was just chrome colored. You could see a punch mark where a machine must have tried to press it in but it obviously did not take. I tapped the disc back into place and put a small ring of solvent resistant epoxy around it and let it dry overnight. Cart runs pretty good now. This may be a indication of the quality of these aftermarket carbs though.

Well that good to know, I have always been a little reluctant to purchase these after market parts. But somethings its the only alternative. I purchased a after market brake cable, its was to be the same length and fit. I had to basically re-engineer it ti fit my cart. Sounds as though you just did the same thing, excellent.
