Default Running to lean?

So I got the aftermarket carb from ebay up and going as I stated in previous post. I started setting at 3/4 turn out on mixture screw and ran it for ten minutes at full speed. When I came back I pulled the new plug and it was pretty funky. Kind of a black carbon look. I cleaned plug and leaned out setting more by screwing needle in. Ran it again and a little better but still black carbon looking. So I leaned it out even more. Im probally only about a quarter turn out from needle being screwed all the way in but plug looks better. I know that 3/4 turn out is a setting point for the original tillotson carb but this being aftermarket carb Im guessing it could be a little different. My question is how do I know if Im running too lean? I dont want to damage the engine. Cart seems to run good where I have it set now. It ran pretty good when it was blackening plug though also. I know its not the gas as its the same gas as the cart had in it when I bought it and when I pulled that plug out it was pretty clean and tan. I also think my timing is dead on or very close. Cart runs good . Its not a speed demon by any means but its a golf cart not a go cart.

Are you running the proper fuel ratio? You Should be using 1.5 oz. two cycle oil to 1 gallon of gas. I use Walmart's super tech two cycle oil rated TC-W3 and have been for almost 11 years. The low speed jet usually have much to do with running mixture. It sounds like you are running too rich probably too much oil in the fuel mixture or the main jet is too large.

Sounds as though tew45 could be right, have you thought about dumping the old fuel and starting with a nice fresh batch, mixed @ 85:1, thats 1 1/2 oz per us gal of gas. Couldn't hurt to try, jakeesspoo. Also if you still have your tillotson carb. you may consider rebuilding it, and replacing and worn parts you come across, this might be your best bet. Good Luck.
