Aftermarket carb update
So i put the ebay aftermarket carb on the cart and it ran great but would only go maybe 5-7 mph. Didnt need much choke and i played with the mixture screw to see if it would run quicker/better but no luck. I took he high speed jet out of the original tillotson carb and put it in aftermarket carb and still no change in speed. So i cleaned the original carb and put its original jet back in it and put it on cart tonight. The cart flies. Almost too fast. It does need a little choke at startup but im gonna try to play with the mixture screw and get it tonrun a little richer. Does anyone run there cart with a little bit of choke at all times? I was thinking of adjusting the choke plate with the cable to close choke a little at all times. Is this a good or bad idea? My compression is great btw so dont think i have any bad seals and has no isue pulling fuel

Re: Aftermarket carb update
Choke is just needed at start-up to help draw fuel. Harley listed 4 jet sizes so the factory jet I believe is second from the bottom on size. Something is not right to have to keep the choke on to run. I believe the mixture is only for idle mixture and may only slight help with WOT. Make sure the manifold is secure and not leaking or has cracks. Also make sure the carb is tight to the gasket to the manifold. I guess if you have changed carbs you probably made sure it was tight. If you have checked everything and it still appears to run lean and you cant find the bigger jets, I guess one could open up the factory jet.

Re: Aftermarket carb update
As these carts age it's not unusal at all to have to choke them up a bit all of the time. All this does is draw more fuel. I think of it as the lazy man's carb adjustment. It won't hurt anything.
You may want to consider an electric fuel pump. |

Re: Aftermarket carb update
Smkummer and lochlin are correct and a little choke at startup is not bad at all. I would not adjust the choke disk for more choke for things are known to change as the engine has run a while. It is never good to introduce an error to compensate for an error!

Re: Aftermarket carb update
My 77 often needs a slight amount of choke to get moving even when its warmed up. Its pretty strange, I can start up 10 times in a row and its fine then the next time it just does not seem to want to 'catch' but as soon as I start pulling the lever it fires. I did the crank seals in it a couple years ago. Compression was close to 100 when I did all the work. Not sure what its got now. Before I did the crank seals it would need a fair amount of choke to get started all the time and often need it to keep running. Had to constantly clean spark plug.

Re: Aftermarket carb update
I sometimes think the carb and pump loses its prime a little and just needs choke to overcome.

Re: Aftermarket carb update
Its been running pretty good lately but like 73eldo said my cat wants a little choke almost all the time at a initial takeoff even when warm. The choke literally only needs pulled out for a second or two till it gets moving. I suppose i can live with that though. Otherwise it seems to run awesome. Almost a little to fast for kids if they were to drive it

Re: Aftermarket carb update
It still sounds like you have a small leak not far from the carb. I have an inline filter about 12 inches before the carb and if I get a small leak there I need to choke often.
