1980 G1 Golf Cart Engine
Hey guys, just took the new to us golf cart to the desert. Ran great at home, and for the first day at the desert, but then would not start and was spitting oil out of the front end of the motor at the case seal. After a few whacks on the starter with the hammer, it would engage, but not start. So I figured I need a new starter after reading many posts on this site. Now the motor is out and disassembled, head off, cylinder off, piston and rings off, how do I get to the crank to replace the seals?? Everything looked OK on the tear down, except for the reeds were shot and the top of the piston had tons of carbon build up. Carb was OK, Plug looked OK. All thoughts are appreciated.
Thanks |

You have to split the case in half to replace the seals. Did you get a compression reading to know if rings require replacing too? Replace brushes in starter instead of hitting with hammer (its easy)..

No need to split the crank to change the seals. You will need a clutch puller bolt for the clutch side and a puller to yank the flywheel for the other side. Make sure when you put the new ones in that they go in square. I always used a small block of wood and just tapped them in.

Ah, yeah, you got me. I should have been sleeping, not typing. But you do have to find a creative way to extract the seals without depositing any crap in the engine. My mind had moved on to replacing the bearings.

Re: 1980 G1 Golf Caft Engine
Guys thanks, this is great info, but I am not there yet. I can't seem to get the clutch off. I can get a rattle gun from work and try that if that is what's needed?? I have a 4' cheater on a ratchet and can't get the leverage. And I will look into the HF puller as well.
On the fan side, I assume its the same puller to remove the flywheel also?? Where can I purchase the new seals? One more question, two of the 4 reeds were torn when I disassembled them. I intend to replace them, but why were they torn?? I did not check compression prior to piston removal. I tore into it assuming it would need replacement, although the cylinder, head and rings all looked ok with no scoring. Thanks again for all help. Brad |

Re: 1980 G1 Golf Cart Engine
The puller for the fan, will not work on the clutch, two different pullers
