Default G2 missing at low rpms

First I want to thank everyone on this forum. I have found so much good info in archives but this one has me stumped.

My cart runs great at high rpms but cuts off and restarts at anything but full throttle. I have checked my wiring for any faults and disconnected everything on the battery ground except the main wire to the starter. I understand it is a floating ground and tried to eliminate any possibility such as lights and accessories. I did rebuild the carb several times and finally convinced it was fuel related I bought a new carb. Obviously this didn't change anything so I'm looking for advice before I replace the cdi.

One odd question there is a body ground wire behind the solenoid. It leads into the harness and not sure why it's there. I did disconnect this mystery ground and it makes no difference.

So, go th the auto parts store and get a $5 dynamic spark tester, this will evaluate your spark while on your running engine. Next, find anyone with a G2 who will let you borrow their Ignitor for a few minutes to test on your cart.

G9's had a ground wire to the solenoid mounting bolt (dont know why), G2's didn't. Whats the serial # of your car? The first thing, I would cut off the small 18 gauge wire that was pigtailed onto the negative battery cable eye end at the starter/generator stud and out an eye end connector on it for a shure positive ground. Worth a shot. Like Gctech said...use a dynamic spark tester or you could "blow" the ignitor.

The cart was originally a g9 and it had the motor replaced with a g2 at least that's the story. The numbers on the tag have been restamped and doesn't make much sense to me. All parts I have replaced have been for a g2 but I know the g9 and g2 are almost identical. Maybe someone can validate if it is a g2 motor.

I bought this cart for my kids years ago and before the holidays it lost compression. Ran great then out of no where it died. I replaced the valves guides etc. It was the exhaust valve btw. It now has excellent compression and like I said runs out great at high revs but cuts out at low rpms.

A couple more questions for you guys. From the ground on the starter there is one wire that goes to what I think is the voltage reg. I'm guessing it needs to be there. That wire also looks as it was tied into the ground behind the solenoid but without unwrapping everything it's hard to say. I have cleaned and tightened all connections. I eliminated the ground behind the solenoid with out any change in performance. Should I leave it ungrounded?

Spark tester is on it's way and will report back again when it gets here but I'd almost bet the bank it's spark related.

I did replace the plug when I did the valves. I have double checked valve clearance after running it for about an hour with no adjustment needed yet.

It does have a g9 ignitor with 5pins. I don't know if that matters as far as grounds etc.

Well the spark tester verified erratic spark at best with low rpms then steady at high rpms.

It's like there is no in between just jumps to high revs with very little pedal. The accelerator pedal cable could use adjustment I'm sure but certainly shouldn't account for my problems.

Unless someone has any other ideas I'm going to start looking at a new ignitor.

I have scoured the archives for best deal on said ignitor I'm open to suggestions if anyone has one. It is the 5 pin G9 ignitor on a G2 motor.

Any input on the two wires I asked about above would also be very much appreciated.

Again thanks to everyone that makes this place great.

With the wealth of knowledge here I was hoping to have a few questions answered. Maybe my problem is unheard of or just hasn't caught the eye of someone that knows.

No comments on where to buy? I guess golf cart king will get my business. The ignitor is $130 and I will order now and it will likely be here tomorrow. I'll report back in hopes to help the next person in my situation.

Presidents' Day so cart king is closed. If anyone reads this and can steer me in a better direction I sure would appreciate it!

Did you read the sticky up top about changing motors? G2 cars have to have complete G2 ignition componets. The same with G9's and also G8's. You cannot mix any componets from these models.

Thanks Mike I have read all the info above. Here's a quote from that thread.
**********
"ok if the g2 and g9 are the same motor can i use a g9 wiring harness on a g2 motor to get rid of the rev limitor"

"Yes, You will need the wireharness, the G9-"TCI/ignitor" and the G9-automatic voltage regulator. "
***********

I mentioned before this cart has a replacement motor and for the life of me I don't know why anyone would restamp the serial plate without reason.

Love that avatar Dave and appreciate the review on the sponsor.
