G5 Sun Classic gas completely dead when cold

1996 gas G5 starting circuit is completely dead in cold weather. Turn key On and push peddle -nothing. twenty three degrees outside. Pushed in garage and warmed up to sixty degrees and turns over. seems to happen everytime it is cold or sometimes when it is very hot? (been doing this for a couple of years)
Not sure where to start looking?

Battery first. When batteries are cold, their power is greatly reduced.

Cables/connections second. If your cables are original, there could be corrosion, which increases resistance. There could also be corrosion on the connections which causes problems with connection. And check for loose connections.

Starter motor third. If the starter/gen is original, it could be worn out. As the brushes wear they get smaller, which can require more power to make it turn. Dirt and carbon dust can also cause an issue here.

If all three were brand new, you would see that baby turn at -10 degrees. LOL

When cold I am not getting a solenoid click - is that telling me that my problem is in the secondary circuit? Having a hard time finding a wiring diagram for the G5 that is readable.

If the battery is good and your are not getting a solenoid click, use a light tester or a VOM to see if you are getting voltage to the solenoid when you press the accelerator at the small red wire leading to it. If you have no voltage you might have a micro switch problem. If you do have voltage then you probably have a bad solenoid. There is, however a possibility that the voltage regulator could be bad too. G5's are notorious for having problems with the original voltage regulator.

If you want, i will dig up my wiring drawing for putting a $40 G2 voltage regulator in place of the $300 G5 regulator.

Read somewhere that a G9 can be used also. Seems there are a lot more wires on the G5?

I like the G1-2-9 regulator the best, as its adjustable. But this includes how to use the newer style too.

So your saying the r/blk "jumper lead" to r/w will complete the solenoid energizing circuit? In this members case, maybe doing it would fix his "starting" problem and maybe the volt reg portion is ok?
