Is this a good deal?
I'm looking for a gas golf cart. Saw one on Craigslist. Unfortunately, since i am brand new to the site I have to wait 7 days to post the link, so I have to describe it. I haven't talked to the owner. He did text me that he thinks its a 1990. Its a G2, 4 stroke with, he thinks, a 300 CC motor. He says it has been well maintained and everything works as its supposed to. He's asking 2,200. It seat 4, has new tires, a canopy, and looks nice in the pictures.
Is this a good motor? I know very little about golf carts. What should I be looking for if I go look at it other than the obvious exerior wear and tear. Anything to notice while its running and driving? Do they have hour meters? This will be the first one I go and take a look at. As far as price, remember this is So Cal near the coast and everything is more expensive. I see much cheaper ones in Arizona, etc. Thanks for your help. |

Re: Is this a good deal?
That's a 4-stroke 285cc, if I remember correctly (the older G-guys will be along shortly with more info I'm sure) - put out somewhere around 8hp which is on the very low end of almost any carts made but they *can* be modded to cruise along pretty good. Be careful with the older carts like that, You can tie up a lot of $ real fast and it's very hard to ever recoup it with a 25 year-old cart. Personally I'd hold out and look for a nice G16, they tend to be on the low end pricewise and are great carts with the 301 engine, they can easily be made to run in the mind to high 20's without spending a dime, the suspensions are nice and there are a lot of nice inexpensive and readily available parts and accessories available for them.

Great little carts. Just check the oil and under the battery as they would rot out from the battery.

Re: Is this a good deal?
That does sound a little high on the price, but as you said it's CA, and I'm not familiar with that market. Around here that same cart in good condition would be around $1500-$1700. They are good carts though. The engine, as some have posted, is a little underpowered if you wanted to put a lift and tires on it etc. They are good carts for clone or big block swaps though.

Re: Is this a good deal?
cart prices tend to be more whim then fact based esp by private sellers
used cars have a black book and loan value that is eazy to find out for each year and model used carts are with out any real value reference books or loan value your g-2 example at 2200 for a 90 model is very high a 90 model cheap car would had cost about twice as much new then a cart and likely would be near 1k value today if in good shape ask a local cart dealer what trade in value for the 90 g-2 would be if traded in on a new cart I would bet under 1k maybe closer to 500 locally in s fla any running gas cart will be priced near 1k even older two strokes with better carts mid teens to low 2k range and some stock newer carts around 3k for current models [likely the best deal] lifted fancy carts start about 2500 if older up to insane prices that some guys get ripped off by dealer/STEALERS for you got to add maintenance costs to any 90 model 25 year old cart likely everything can need replacement soon motor, clutches, wheel and rear axle bearings, or worse and why I would buy the best newest cart you can find a deal on or the worst cheapest cart , but plan and budget to replace everything over the next few years |

Re: Is this a good deal?
Tough call in your market, a G16 around here, stock and in good condition is going to fetch $1400-1800, a G2 is going to go around $800-1200 unless just about *perfect* then maybe as high as $1500

Re: Is this a good deal?
It's all in what you want and what your budget is as for asking what a dealer would give trade in I wouldn't go by that I was gonna buy a new cart last summer and had a mint 02 yamaha g16 with a lot accessesiores and they only would allow me $1250 on trade I put on Craigslist and sold it for $3500 in less than 30 min best advice to hold out for a deal

I'm not really expecting anyone to sell me one at trade in value. That's always going to be below bluebook or NADA. I'm interested in market value, not trade in value. Are you saying that market value should be the same as trade in value? |
