Trading txt for G21-a
So i am looking at a used g21a guy is willing to trade to for my 2006 txt electric. Test drove today and seems that there is just no power at top end. Should I be worried or what should I check I have never had a gas cart so not sure what to check. I am assuming compression is ok because it seems to run just no top end. Thoughts???
Does anyone know what the compression should be if I take my test kit. P.s. Am I getting a raw deal just lookin to go gas???? |

Re: G21a
bad motor mounts can rob you of top end rather quickly, also the clutches if not maintained tend to wear out and can give the same symptoms ... And a compression check is imperative, carts can "Run" just fine with low compression but won't perform well at all. Either way, as long as the years are close a trade electric to gasser is generally a good thing, Gas carts tend to retain their value FAR better. Most auto parts places will "Loan" a compression tester (with a deposit, of course) - I'd start there but with those carts I'd say mounts (cheap) belt (cheap) or clutches (not so cheap, a few hundred at worst case) would be likely culprits.
That said, with Yamahas, if the governor is cranked down it will feel like a sudden loss of all power suddenly when it engages, does it do it at right around the same speed everytime? Try driving it up a steep hill with the pedal to the floor, if it keeps pulling solidly then you could be feeling nothing more than the governor engaging |

Re: G21a
Yes I am in fl. So hills are hard to come by. But cart runs solid at low rpm a slight buck at idol and the govonor screw from what I saw was cranked in maybe 25% of bolt length??

Compression 155 to 175 lbs at wide open throttle. Remember that Yamaha utility vehicle's have a lower ratio forward gear, they where desighned to work, not go fast. Good luck.

Re: Trading txt for G21-a
I was going to say the same thing as smallblock. The gearing can have a big affect on how the power feels at high rpm. A cart like that, all stock, should run about 20mph, give or take a few. On flat pavement it should accelerate to that point in about 5-8 seconds, with no extra weight. Add cargo and passenger and the stock engine slows down a lot.
And I also agree about the standard maintenance items. Check mounts for movement, they should move just slightly when you rock the engine back and forth with your hands. Look for ripped rubber at the mounts. Belt, yep, most common cause of poor performance, will cost you $25. Tune up also $25. Clutches, yes they will cause issues but only if they are broken or worn out. Look on the sheave faces for "dishing" or "concave" surface. The sheave faces should be clean and flat, not bumpy or dirty. If the clutch isn't shifting all the way out, it will cause low top end speed. If the clutch won't backshift, it will cause a loss in power when going up hill. I'd make the trade if the compression checks out. The rest is "normal" stuff that is pretty easy to fix. |

Re: Trading txt for G21-a
Replaced and Reset all cables. New Clutch. And all seems well. I ran it down the block just for a stint and got good speed. I will work some more on it once i have the frame lights and what not to make it legal in my area...
