Default 1982 G1 power loss and loud exhaust

Hi All,

I recently rebuilt my G1 and although stumbling on a few hurdles along the way, it was running well, just loud.

After talking to a bloke at the pub about it, he suggested trying to repack the motor with non-flammable wadding. I found some on ebay, cut a panel out of my muffler, packed all the voids with the material and welded it back together. After bolting the muffler back on, it was much quieter, but after about 5 holes of golf, it started to lose power badly and struggle to get up hills. I tried pulling the choke on thinking I'd blown a seal, but this made the power loss worst.

2 questions,
1- could the power loss be due to residual oil building up on the fabric and the exhaust struggling to breathe?
2- Is there any easy way to make a g1 quieter?

It's probably the exhaust. Two stroke mufflers are kind of tuned to the motor.

So I cut the muffler apart and removed all the packing and went to a mates panel shop to weld it all back together. When I got there, he told me they had removed a Subaru WRX exhaust from a crashed car during the week and if I could make it fit, I could have it.

I cut the main pipe from the original and welded it to the new box, and then reduced the pipe size from some scraps laying around the workshop. The end result, a cooler running temperature, quieter and faster cart. It has taken my top speed from 12.7km/h to 19.5km/h. It's also stainless steel so I won't need to worry about rust!

I like it, but the pipe pointed right at the clutch will hasten its demise, the belt as well.
