Default G16 needs choking to start

Good morning, it has been a long time for me but I need some help once again please.

I have two G16s, a 97 and a 98.

I lifted the 98 and have 23 inch tires on it. I have backed the governor off on both and installed the improved low end spring on both a few years ago.

Here is my problem, lately the lifted 98 needs to be choked when starting. It runs great after you get going.

I have all new fuel lines, filter etc. on the cart.

I have read a few posts about a jet modification for lifted carts. Could that be my problem? Any other ideas? Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks

Well I have read the last year's worth of threads that have anything remotely to do with my problem and am going to jump on this thing tomorrow.

This board is invaluable.

I would say to just remove the carb first and give it a thorough cleaning. Also the valves could possibly need adjustment

Thank you dbmachine. I am also suspicious of the carb spacer being cracked or maybe a dried up/cracked gasket allowing the mixture to be leaned out.

I would check the simple things first. My carb spacer was cracked and valves were out of adjustment too when I first got my cart. I have recently rebuilt my motor with all new gaskets and have previously put larger jets in the carb per Plowman with his performance kit and still have to pull choke out every now and then so out of the ordinary to do this .

Thanks BamaG14. I went ahead and ordered gaskets and will pull it apart when they come in. I have seen several posts about Plowman and look forward to learning more about how to contact him/them and do some business with them.

Ok, I apologize for just now getting back on this as I just got to the cart yesterday. Thanks again for all of the help on this, it is truly appreciated.

It is the first time I had the air box off of the '98 I believe.

The carb spacer was in great shape once I cleaned it up and got all the old gasket material removed.

Cleaned carb with spray and blew it out, replaced crank case pressure hose to fuel pump and I replaced the fuel pump since I had a new one.

While I was there I went ahead and put a new plug in since it had been three years. The old one's color looked great, indicating to me that it seems to be happy with the stock jetting.

The cart runs better than it ever has since I have owned it now, no choking required. I let it set a few hours and it started right up.

Thanks again and hopefully someday I can be of some help to someone on here.

Dirty carb or partially plugged jet sounds like what the issue was

I installed a jet for a "lifted cart", with no other modifications, when I cleaned the carb on my G16 project. It fouled the plug quickly and basically ran like crap. Stock jetting worked much better.

That being said, the kits from Plowmans include all necessary jetting, plus instructions for modifying the air box and governor. This, plus the proper secondary for your application makes for a nice package. I'm very happy with the Performance Kit on the G22...
