Default Yamaha Drive Differential Failure

Hello,

First of all what a great wealth of info is on this site.

Anyway, I bought a 2007/2008 Drive a few weeks ago knowing it has the dreaded white tag axle. It currently works fine but there is some grinding while coasting that stops when you touch the brakes, which seem to work pretty decent. I want to try to figure out the problem and repair before something really bad happens with it. Also, there is some in and out play on the input shaft on the differential that the clutch is mounted to. It does not wiggle side to side but can be pulled in and out a little bit.

I have read about the input shaft and intermediate gear failures as much as I can find on the forum here. Is it possible to change out the input shaft and the intermediate gear myself? I have rebuilt engines and transmissions before so I think it should be ok. Are the parts available and about how much are we talking in parts to get the gear and everything else needed to button back up?

I have looked at some parts diagrams online but am having a hard time identifying out the right part numbers...

Any insight would be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Looking at what parts cost Individualy inside the transaxle you will have 500$ in parts in no time. There are a few sites like partspak, discount yamaha parts, gearhead etc where you can get the entire transaxle for around 850$. Might be something to consider getting a new assembly to relieve some headache trying to repair and not knowing how much inside is damaged. Hate to order new parts, install them and it still make the same noise.

The whole "white tag" thing is early drive Electric only. You might have input shaft problems in your gasser (that trans's weak link). You can repair it yourself, the most specialized tool needed to change it is a pair of small snapring pliers. Axle Will need to be removed from cart, stood on end, and split in half.

Ok, yeah it is a gas model, so at least it might not be as bad as I thought it could be.

I guess the best thing to do would be remove the axle from the cart, split it, and see what it looks like in there. If its only the input shaft it seems that the part itself can be had for around $100 plus any gaskets or seals that I might need unless I am looking wrong.

I am having a heck of a time finding an exploded parts view and identifying on it what the actual failure point might be. If any of you guys have a link and/or a part number to show what the common area for trouble is it would be greatly appreciated.

Once again, thanks!

Thank you! That is what I was looking for. I also noticed there is no gasket where you split the case. Do they just use some type of liquid gasket, in the past I have had great success with HondaBond gasket maker.

Based on the price list if there is more than 1 or 2 things wrong I can see how getting a new unit could be more cost effective. I have found JW1-G6300-02-00 which is the new updated replacement I believe for around $800 to my house.

I am going to start tearing it apart tonight and this weekend around labor day festivities. Hopefully I will know upon opening it up what some of the ailments are. I assume the input shaft failures result in the teeth on the gear wearing funny? It does have in and out play in the shaft but not any "wobble" at least with my hand on the clutch.

Well I got the differential out and apart tonight. I have not seen a golf cart one before, but by the standards of trucks etc I have seen there does not seem to be anything wrong with it.

I have attached a few pictures if you guys see anything odd please let me know. If not here, could it be the clutches making noises? I see the secondary is pretty sloppy especially once I removed it.

Thanks!

Since you have it apart do you mind taking a picture of the governor fork? I've never seen what it looks like on the inside of the transaxle. I hear horror stories of the governor fork falling down into the transaxle and the little weights that are attached to it.

Cgtech is a seasoned yamaha mechanic here on the forums. He is the the wealth of knowledge about anything with these carts. He will chime in soon I'm sure.
