Default G22 Starter/Generator cleaning.. do I?

Hey guys, did enough research to find out that my starter/generator is screwed and needed new brushes. Just picked up a new set after tearing my SG apart. Quite a mess of the brushes dust all in there. From what I have read, I believe I should lightly sand the armature, there is grey dust all in the SG also. Should I just blow it out with air, or use electrical contact cleaner and then blast with air? Suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

I blow all parts out with compressed air....just don't breath that dust! It's NASTY! I also use emery cloth to clean up the comutator (were the brushes ride) and check for any "burnt spots" between the segments, if there are any, the brushes will "find those" when the starter/generator is turned over. You can also use a volt meter (on continuity) to check each segment for a bad section. I always check the "feild" studs for continuity and a reading of 5 ohms+/-. Make shure the new brushes "travel" easily thru the holders and the brush wire leads don't "bind" the brush on reintallation. It's not rocket sience, but must be done right. Good luck

+ 100 that guy ^^ . He nailed it 100%. (Smallblock to the rescue again). Compressed air. OUTSIDE of your shop, The dust is horrible to breathe (tastes bad for the rest of the day, may cause respiratory everything bad). Chemical cleaning is not typically needed, just a good inspection, Light sanding (excessive sanding without a proper lathe may cause even more problems). If it needs more than a light "scuff" job to look good, it needs a shop to fix it right (still far cheaper than a new one, always skip the "dirt cheap china replacements").
