Help! Yamaha G1 Gas Golf Cart Problem

I have a huge problem that I have been trying to figure out for about 3 months now on my golf cart. When I start my golf cart and it has been sitting for a while it takes off and does just fine runs good and everything, but after the cart runs for a while it slowly starts to slow down and eventually stops. It will try to shift into gear, but it does not. Its just like it's in neutral. It also seemed to lose power when I would go up hills. The things I have done are as follows:

* New Spark Plug
* Checked Fuel pump
* Cleaned Carburetor
* Cleaned Muffler
* Checked Compression running at about 90

Any one have any ideas? Any help would be appreciated. Thank You!

Is it overheating? If so you need to remove the shrouds and clean the cooling fins, clean the fan intake area on the side.

It may be worn out and 2 strokes do that when they get hot the cylinder expands and they lose more compression. You would need a piston/bored cylinder. I would check the compression cold and hot and note the difference. Do it with the throttle open.

I don't know what you mean by shift into gear, a G1 is always in gear aside from it running a CVT all the time that does disengage at idle. The engine runs backwards to reverse. If you have a problem with the CVT it can cause the engine rpm to be incorrect, it will bog down if the clutch is not shifting right. Check the ramps on the back of the secondary for wear or bad plastic shoes. Make sure your belt is over 1" wide.

By not shift do you mean just the starter spinning and motor not running? Another thing to check is run it until it acts up like you said and then pull plug to see if it has spark coils are known to work when cold but stop working once they warm up

So we did some digging after some of your guys suggestions and this is what we found.

The quickest and easiest way is to order a top end kit. It will come with a new piston, rings cylinder and all gaskets necessary to do a complete top end rebuild. It will be around $200. I suppose you could buy a new piston and rings....that is if your cylinder is still in good shape and it's probably not. Piston slap may have ruined the piston due to excessive play in between the piston and cylinder bore.

I see your cart says Iowa Hawkeyes (if you live in Iowa) I would just order oversized piston and take your cylinder into local Arnold motor suppy and have them bore it out if it isn't ruiend think last time I took one to arnolds in storm lake it was around 60 dollars for the machine work cheaper than buying entire kit

Also looking for my exact year and my serial number is J31-160521. When I look it up it doesnt have a year matching this serial number? so what year is it? Thanks again for everything everyone.

Thanks for clearing up the year. So if I get this top engine repair kit that should solve my problem of losing power when the engine heats up correct?
