Default Need help identifying model number

Howdy y'all! Im glad that I found this forum.

Last week, I picked up what I believe to be a Yamaha G2. I have looked at the usual areas where a serial number would be (also used the diagrams in the sticky above) and no dice. There is a fair amount of corrosion around the battery tray, so if there had been a s/n plate there, it is likely long gone. It smokes like uncle buck's car, runs like a scalded dog (previous owner somehow disconnected the governor according to him), and is a hideously awesome machine.
All that said, I want to make sure that I'm ordering the correct parts to fix it. It is in need of an ignition coil, piston, rings, etc., and likely needs various gaskets and seals, as there is an Exxon Valdez worth of oil on the "skid plate" in the engine compartment. That is the bad news.
The good news is that I only paid $300 for a buggy that will be fun to work on, and being that it isn't electric, or computer controlled, this old redneck from south Texas can wrench on it rather than paying someone else to do it for me. If the attached photo doesn't give you enough to identify it with, let me know and I can take photos of specific areas of the buggy.

Thanks in advance!

Also, sorry for the upside down photo. I suppose it isn't just the fishing forums that I frequent that have that happen when posting from the iPad.

Its a G2. If you flip the seat up the plate is on the floor under the shifter, looking from over the engine. G2 have black trim down the rockers, usually the rear bumper, white steering column and wheel, and alum trim on the front cubby, some or all have tubular A arms in front the G9 are stamped. However there is not much difference otherwise except G9 are little bit newer.

G9 don't have the plate under the motor, and are said to run cooler without those plates down there. Smoking likely means the oil ring is toast, so you need to hone and ring it or bore/piston. That is common, and they still run well but blow oil.

I put a clone engine in mine instead of rebuilding it, its a lot of fun though you really need HS gears or large tires to enjoy the extra power.

Good info, thank you!

If you don't mind me asking, where did you order the clone engine from, and what did it cost? I don't feel like pouring a bunch of money into an engine on a 20+ year old cart, that may or may not have other issues. We are already looking at $600 or so for tires, wheels, and a cheapo lift kit.

You can get clones all over lot of people get them at harbor freight, I got mine at home depot online for less than 300 on sale back then, also got another one from carolstream. There is a post HD had them on sale again a couple weeks ago. You can get a nicer one from vegas carts, it has more power and better parts but costs more, but if you plan to mod one its a great deal. Another issue is they don't charge so if you want to toss the gen and use key start you need an alternator or get one with a 18A charge system on it. If you go cheap you can get one about $300, 40 for the adapter to fit your stock clutch, you have to figure out an exhaust, have to make or buy a mount, that is 98% of it. You can get springs and timing key for $20 or something to run it without a governor.
