Default G9 help

Hey guys, I've got a couple questions on my cart. Ive got a g11 work cart that I swapped a g9 motor into back in 2011. You guys helped me figure out the ignition problem when I did the swap. Anyhow, the g9 motor has been losing its umph so I pulled it in to the shop to give her some love. First off, a compression test showed about 110 psi, so I checked the valves, the exhaust valve was loose, i mean .050 loose, and the intake valve was at 0, after I set them where they should be i now have a solid 150 psi. Couple questions, the oil line that runs from the back of the motor up to the valve cover delivers oil to the rockers and pushrods I'm assuming? With the hose disconnected from the block and the engine spinning what kinda of flow should I see from that nipple? Should it be a flow or just spurts? I blew out the line and blew some pressure down that nipple and it didn't seem to be obstructed, I just don't know how much oil I should see coming from there? Next question the little valve that is plumbed between the valve cover/fuel pump and tees down to the block, is that supposed to be a one way valve? I can blow or suck through that thing when its disconnected, I'm not sure what purpose it serves. Also, I noticed with the valve cover removed when I turned the engine over a few times the rocker shaft seems to want to walk out one side, there doesnt appear to be any type of retainer to keep it from sliding out completely besides the valve cover, you can actually see evidence on both sides of the valve cover where its been making contact, I don't know if that is normal or not. Last question, the dipstick. I know everyone says only run 1 qt of oil, however with a qt in it, theres no oil on the dipstick, the cart isn't lifted. I don't know if somehow I ended up with the wrong dipstick or what the story is. Anyhow thanks for any help you can give! Mike

The only thing I can help you with is the oil.
After I put 1 1/2 guards in it filled up my new air cleaner with oil.
So I would stick with 1 quart

Thanks Skoal! Can anyone tell me if the little vacuum control valve is in fact a check valve? I can blow through it as well as suck through it. I just called the local cart place and they couldn't tell me...thanks again! Mike

Yes, one way check valve. Should be able to blow thru it, but closes when sucked on. It helps the oils stay in the oiler tube (like a step ladder). Sounds like the lack of oil has caused the "rocker support and pin" to wear out. That can also cause valve adjustment issues.

Thank small bloc, I just took it apart and the valve was hung up, it works now, ill replace it anyway. So the rocker shaft(as I'm calling it) has nothing to retain it? It walked out about a half inch when I spun the motor with the valve cover off and I was able to just tap it back in place. What would the fix for this be? Thanks again! Mike

No retainers. J38-12156-00-00 shaft and J38-12152-00-00 support, rocker arm...both still available.

Yes, same for all J38/Jn5 engines (G2/G9/G8/early G11 and even G14's).

Thank you! I found the parts online and will order tomorrow. Is there a way to confirm adequate oil flow to the valves/rockers? From what I've read, It seems that the oil is being slung from the crankcase into that rear line but is also utilizing vacuum to get it up into the valve cover, so how can I be sure that its doing its thing? With the hose disconnected from the nipple on the block that feeds oil up to the valve cover, I'm just getting squirts of oil out of that nipple, I'm assuming this isn't a good test since the system is also utilizing the vacuum to get it to the valves/rockers? Id just like to make sure its working as its supposed to once I get it all buttoned up...Thanks again man!

I would blow air through that oil line back into the crank case to dislodge any sludge that might be blocking the passage!! Then change oil.
