Default Advice on serious filters for desert use

In the summer I will be taking a G2 chassis that I will have turned into an Art Car to Nevada. I will have modified the body significantly (shouldn't be able to tell I started with a golf cart) and the place I am going has flat, hard ground but it can get dusty as all hell.

I expect my biggest challenge to reliability will be keeping the engine running with all that dust flying around. I plan to bring many air and fuel filters but I'm looking for tips.
  • are any brand, type of model of filter better for this type of environment?
  • has anyone tried doubling up the fuel filters and put two on the line or will that cause it to run way too thin?
  • any other suggestions for keeping as much dust out as possible? (keep in mind it will be hot during the day so I need to let it breath enough to keep it from overheating)

Thanks for any info you can share.

If you are getting enough dust into the fuel system to clog the fuel filter, you have a different problem. You shouldn't need to change the fuel filter even in the dustiest conditions.

As for the air filter, I would suggest a canister type, like those found on zero-turn mowers and such. I have one on my cart.

I ran a UNI on my G1. In dusty conditions, it would cake up very quickly.

I run a K&N with an Outerwears cover on my cart, my ATV's, and my diesel 4x4 truck. All we ride is desert, dunes. The key is NOT to over oil the filter.

The canister systems are very nice as well.

100% agree with you. Not sure if you used there filter skin's or not but we used to run uni filters on motocross bike's and just replace filter skin's after riding a while. Always brought extra filter and three extra skinsrode all day just keep an eye on it in the extreme dust. I think your canister idea is probably best for the dust.just my .02

Thanks for the tips everyone. Do any of you have a model/part # of a canister style air filter that you know fits or would recommend for a Yamaha G2 (1990)?

Pretty hard to beat the stock filter, and its cleanable in the field. K&N are the worst, except for race motors, (that are torn down on a regular basis!!)

The stock system already uses a easily servicable pre-filter, and has plenty of surface area, it was designed for offroad use. The cotton/gauze cleanable filters have been shown to be among the worst at trapping the fine dust.
