I used the old filter as well!! been 6+ yrs now!! Flow through the in tank filter is so slow, nothing is going to get lodged in it, I just back flow, rinsed it out and put it back in!!

That is also a huge filter for that engine, the inline filter element is tiny in comparison. I do like seeing the fuel in there though.
