Question exploding primary clutch

hi my name is carl, I own a small repair shop in PA. recently I have a problem with a primary clutch on a Yamaha G16 blowing apart actually exploding!!!! I was wondering how common or uncommon this is? has any one else seen or heard of this happing? thank you very much for your time.

Does it have a stock clutch (with grease fitting & 3 round rollers), or Comet clutch (with a bunch of black plastic weights & no grease fitting)? If its the stock clutch & the weights are flying past the rollers, it usually just needs new rollers & bushings. But it could be worn to the point that it will eat the new rollers. Look for a bunch of wear where shown (this clutch is pretty much garbage).

Ok, i guess we can safely say that one is not a good clutch for rebuild . Im glad i wasnt sitting on that seat when that happened (having had a comet spit out all its weights on me). Im betting that the sliding sheave was just worn too thin. New front clutch, and have a good look for bad wear on the rear clutch too. New belt also.

believe me I get all that! we had this cart in to clean carb and minor maintenance , we got the carb done fired it up and clutch blew to pieces! it hit my buddy in the head, fractured his skull! what I was wondering was is this something that is common?

just for the record ive been a mechanic for over 15 years, so im not ur average dummy! mayb im worse, lol! i mostly work on automotive, but i have experience in many other areas as well! im just trying to make sense of this so i can hopefully prevent it from hurting or killing someone else!!!!

It is very uncommon. Its a byproduct of extreme wear or incorrect assembly.

I agree.

Regular preventative maintenance most likely would have caught this before the damage.
