Default g16 will not start

Good evening. My g16's oil light came on a few weeks ago. I parked it and forgot about it. A couple days later I walked by and noticed the light was still on. The next day when I went to put oil in the light was out. I put a little oil in and tried it but it would not start. Figured the light killed the battery so I got a new battery. Old one was 4 plus years old. I put the new battery in and still would not start. 12 volts on battery, 12 v at solenoid power coming in. 12 v on both small wires on soenoid. Back up buzzer does not buzz. I can jump the solenoid from small black wire on solenoid to big wire going to generator and the buzzer comes on and fuse blows. I can jump the two large post on the solenoid and the generator turns on. I tried a solenoid from slack auto resulting in same symptoms. I also got a solenoid off of amazon for a g16 with same symptoms. The generator runs when hooked to a battery charger. I have voltage everywhere I think I should. Pedal switches work also and have swapped the ignition switch. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a short or bad connection somewhere since you've replced solenoid and everything else checks out.

Its been a while since I messed with electrical on a g16 and hopfully some of these other talented techs will chime in. First clean and triple check all your connections. Make sure you dont have a short somewhere. Also check your regulator over the passenger side rear fender. You'll have to search the forum for specifics on testing. I can't remember the specific volts coming off that thing. I want to say 5 but not sure. Double check connections there and the 10 amp fuse area.

Make sure you have no accessories grounded to the frame on this model cart. Ground to the neg battery post only.

I will look for how to test the voltage regulator. If I remember right I had 12 volts on three legs of it when I looked at it earlier. I have checked and rechecked everything dozens of times. I had 12 volts on one side of the back up buzzer and 5 v on the other side. Does this sound right? I do not have any accessories hooked up. Thanks for your help.

Yes, that sounds right but like I said, its been a long time since I messed with the electrical on a G16. And the regulator has more to do with recharging the battery but it was the only other area I could think to double check at this time. The wiring and connections on these can get old and have a weak connections at times. I had a G9 that I never did figure out what the issue was with electrical issues. I ended up making a new wiring harness which solved a multitude of issues.

Yamaha's are very very dependent on super clean connections especially at the battery. And a fully charged battery. Even if the battery terminals look clean, if they are not almost shinny, they are dead.

Yamaha's are also very particular about anything grounded to the frame or a wire shorting to the frame. It will blow the 10amp fuse every time.

Have you tried another battery just for the heck of it? Maybe you have a cracked cell in the battery that dies out with load. Try the one out of your car or a camper or whatever. Just curious since you have a new solenoid and starter/generator will kick over if you use a battery jumper.

Hopfully mikemac, sho, or smallblock will be able help with this later. I know what its like wanting your cart on the weekend.

Old terminals were bad so I replaced them with the battery. I have not tried a different battery. Will pull one off the tractor later .

not sure if yours is the same as my g8 but I couldn't get mine to crank at all, there was a small ground wire plug coming from the starter/gen( A1) that was not getting a connection (came unplugged but not all the way.. worth a check. The A1 is the negative connection coming from the battery to the starter.. the only other thing I think it might be (agreeing with spriddle)is the voltage regulator I replaced mine because it would not stop cranking..

you did say the starter/gen cranks when you jump the two larger post.. if it does crank then your battery is good.

Yep. I can get the generator to run fine when jumped. I cannot see any other grounds coming from the generator other than a going back to the negative battery post.

A little more info on the oil light- the float sensor inside the block has a wire that exits the engine just below the starter/generator on the clutch side. Can be easily seen by looking just behind the drive belt. Only 1 wire. If you unplug that wire (only a few inches from the exit-point from the engine) the light should go off. If it does, the oil level or sensor is suspect. If it does not go off, the problem is in the wiring on the cart. The sensor is known to gum-up/stick on rare occasions, and can only be serviced by opening the engine up.

The light is not on right now. Bulb is good. I have tried it with that sensor unplugged.
