Default Yamaha g1 primary sheave compression spring replacement

I know from searching the forums that this question has bean asked many times over the years. But (ever hopeful) I’ll ask it again in case any one has come up with a recent solution.

During my recent engine rebuild, I dismantled, examined, cleaned and lubricated my primary sheave (clutch). It appears to be in serviceable condition, without excessive wear, except for the compression spring. The standard Yamaha G1 Primary sheave compression spring has a double coil at each end. Mine has apparently been modified or replaced by some previous owner since it only has a double coil at one end. My clutch functions but I think it’s getting into high gear too quickly and I’m losing low end torque.

Has anyone found a satisfactory substitute replacement for the “Yamaha 90501-32557-00 SPRING,COMPRESSION (NLA)” that is close to the original spring in performance? I’ve seen the expensive “performance” springs available on line, but I’d like to stick to the original as closely as possible, if possible.

Thanks,

Twobore

That is true but any original spring from the 80s is not going to be in spec. I saw them on ebay at one time but have no idea where you could find one.

Here is a thread on them http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-y...uestion-3.html

You might also call Plowmans and see what he says.

I agree that the original springs are going to be out-of-spec by now. I might have a original (new from the 90s) spring. Also worth noting is that the G1 motor has far less low end torque than the 4 stroke, so its tuned a bit higher to utilitize the "best part" of the power/rpm range. A new secondary clutch spring is also where i would start.
