Default 1991 G5 Sun Classic Engine Cutting Out Going Up Hills

I have a 1991 Yamaha G5 Sun Classic golf cart that will run fine with it is on level ground, but one you start up an incline it acts like it is either starving for gas or flooding out. I can stop once it starts cutting out on the incline, let it sit for a few seconds, and then it will take right off again. I can't really smell that it is flooding, but it is different that it will work once I have stopped for a bit. Any suggestions? I plan on going thought the cart tonight to begin checking things off and replacing items one by one. I will start with the compression check. Thanks.

I know this sounds crazy...take off the air box hose at the carb, fold it out of the way and run the car. If runs better, you have an air box sealing problem. It's an easy test.

Thanks. I will give it a try. I checked the compression last night and it was about 115psi so that seemed to be fine.

115 is to low. Should be 155 to 170. Did you do the test at side open throttle?

Here is what I have done so far. I checked the compression again with the throttle wide open and it tested the same at about 115 - 120 psi. I put a little oil in the cylinder to see if the compression would go up and it stayed the same. I have changed the spark plug, fuel filter, and air filter. I also tried unhooking the air filter from the carb and run it. All with the same results. It will run fine on flat ground and once the engine starts to get a little load on it going up a hill it starts cutting out. I can let off the gas even more and it will run but eventually stop. I will let it set a few seconds and it will take right back off. It's almost like I forgot to turn the gas on. Do you think changing the fuel pump out will help anything or is this a common symptom of low compression or an engine issue? I am new to working on the golf cart engines. Any additional information and knowledge would be appreciated.

I have to wonder if this is float level related.

Sounds like a compression issue 40 psi low is a lot check valve lash they are supposed to be .004 but if they are tight the valves may not be seating completely causing the low compression

Thanks for the advice. I cleaned the carb and put it back on with the same results. I have been hoping that I would not have to tear into the engine, but that sounds like it might have to be the next step. I'll probably take it to someone that knows what they are doing for that.

Don't have to tear into the engine to check/adjust valves. Remove the 4 hex head screws and pull off the valve cover. Pull the spark plug, use a screw driver in the spark plug hole, rotate the primary clutch till the piston is at top dead center and check the gap. I do recommend adjusting tnem, then turn the engine over several times, check the gap, turn the engine over several times and check the gap again.
