Yamaha G2 loosing power
My gas Yamaha G2 is loosing power. It starts and runs fine. I use it to drive to a pier at the bottom of a hill. First run down and back up it runs fine. Second run at pretty much the same place on the uphill leg it starts to miss and then it stops like it's running out of fuel. Choke helps, but not for long. It has a new Carb, new plugs and a new coil. It ends up making it up the hill, but not without a lot of stopping and starting. I have tried changing the float level on the basis that not enough fuel wasn't in the bowl - i couldn't work out whether lower or higher in the bowl was correct - but either way, very little difference. Can anyone please help?

Re: Yamaha G2 loosing power
Sounds like your pulse pump isn't work after it heats up. Check for vacuum leaks.

Re: Yamaha G2 loosing power
I agree with Shepard. Mine would run for a mile or so then it would bog down and seem like it was out of gas. I could use the choke to get a couple hundred yards out of it once it died. My problem ended up being the crank seals. Once the seals went bad my fuel pump wasn't getting the pulse from the crankcase because of lost pressure through the seals. Hope you can figure it out.

Re: Yamaha G2 loosing power
Thanks guys. Is there an option to retro-fit an electric fuel pump? The cart is on a reasonably remote island so the logistics of getting it to proper workshop to pull the engine apart to replace the seals are rather complex. Has anyone heard of this?

Re: Yamaha G2 loosing power
We'd look at wiring it to the accelerator micro-switch. Has anyone done it? If so what pump did you use?

Re: Yamaha G2 loosing power
I replaced my seals while the motor was in the cart. The fuel pump should also accessible without removing the motor. You may want to take the pump off and see if its even bad first before you replace with an electric. Once you have the pump off gently blow into the pulse input and listen for it to click while you blow into it. If you don't hear that clicking when blowing in and out you have a bad diaphragm or its completely clogged.

Re: Yamaha G2 loosing power
Problem solved! We wired a low pressure fuel pump into the starter relay, so it's runs when the gas pedal is pressed. It was a 1-4 PSI pump. We had to adjust the float in the carb to make sure that it didn't flood and we thought it was still a bit over-fuelled so put a restrictor in-line as well. Buggy runs great. It's a medium term fix - at some stage we'll have to replace the crank seals, but given the low usage (about 5 hours a month) I'll keep an eye on the oil level and it should be ok for a while! Thanks all for your help!
