G1 Seal Replacement Now What
Hey folks hope someone can help. I replaced the clutch side seal because it was leaky and not running good. Checked the fan side and it looked good (dry). Put everything back together and it runs but only low rpm. Not sure were to go from here. It ran great prior to seal giving out. Any suggestions?
Thanks, J R |

Check compression clean carb make sure fuel pump has good flow check/change spark plug and report back....also when you had timing plate off on fan side did you line the marks back up when you reinstalled it?

Thanks Spicyunicorn. I think I may not have it timed right as it ran great before seal started leaking. I cleaned up everything and must not have gotten it back to where it was. Any suggestions as to how to get it timed backed to where it was?

Re: G1 Seal Replacement Now What
Ok, so I have done this and still no go. See pic below (if I did it right to upload). It revs up then back down to a low idle. Not sure what it could be. Like I stated the only thing I did was change crank seal on clutch side. Checked and cleaned fan side. It ran great prior to this. Could I have done something installing the clutch side seal?

Re: G1 Seal Replacement Now What
timing is correct if youre sure carb is cleaned and have good spark i would check compression next a lot of times the seals are bad long before they are fixed and lean it out and break piston rings

Spicyunicorn.
Thanks for all the advice. I will check compression. Won't get to it for a day or two. I will let you know what I find out. Man these things are great when they run but when they don't they are fun to fix! |

Shure wish you would have changed that crank seal while you were in there. Just because it wasn't oil soaked, doesn't mean the seal isn't deteriorated.

Re: G1 Seal Replacement Now What
I'm agree with smallblock on replacing both seals. I just did my G1 2 weeks ago and noticed oil build up around my crank seal and the fan side was dry but the fan side seal was worse than the crank side when I took them off. The outside of the seal may look good bit there's a small "v" ridge on the inside diameter of the seal that rides against the shaft that was worn out completely due to 34 years of friction between the shaft and the rubber. Just my 2 cents on the matter.

Re: G1 Seal Replacement Now What
Smallblock and Molon thanks for the advice. I actually bought the seal for the fan side but did not replace it when I saw that it was dry. I will replace now that you guys weighed in. I will also check compression. Hopefully I can get to it this weekend. I will let you guys know how I make out. Again, thanks for all the help! I love this forum.
