Default secondary sheave

some here know that I am doing a frame up resto on my 86 G2.. today I was cleaning up the rear end getting it ready to paint, and I decided to pull off the secondary sheave. my question is would it hurt the sheave if I was to sandblast both halves as well as the secondary spring seat? Also while I have it apart I was wondering if I need to change out the spring.. I have read articles here and there about guys running the Plowman's clutch kits, this is a stock cart and I have personally never had it on the road..when I bought it the cart was sitting for a year and didn't run. After I got fresh gas in it and rebuilt the fuel pump and cleaned the carb. I got it started and it ran good with no smoke.. that when I began the tear down.. so is the stock spring on the clutch good enough?

The cart will run, a new spring would be better running if that is original just because the springs lose their spring over time (and that is pretty old) and then it does not shift as well as it should. The umax works nice if you tow or have a lifted cart with big tires, but I don't think you want a bigger spring for a stock cart you just drive around I would get a new stock one. Bigger spring makes it rev harder at lower speeds. Towing or big tires (that make higher gearing) put large loads on the cart it does not have in normal use, so you need the extra power. If you are really cheap you can vice the old spring and stretch it longer, unless you think it was replaced then its ok.

I don't think lightly sandblasting so you could paint would hurt, but be careful with sand it eats alum fast. Would be better to use glass or something less harsh than sand.

I am going to add a lift to the cart with probably 23" tires..

I have added a few pics.. the inner sheave has a wear pattern on all 3 contact areas..is this a common thing? It looks like the ramp shoes are held in with a small screw.. what are the shoes made of?

The wear pattern on the sliding sheave looks normal to me. The umax spring will be a good cheap investment for a lifted cart. Replace the ramp shoes while you've got it apart. They're cheap, too.

Umax spring on top, new stock spring and 12 yr old spring.

Max, I haven't painted anything on the sheaves, and I wouldn't blast any of the wear surfaces on them. Just make more wear on the friction surfaces for the shoes and belt to smooth them out again. Also, there will always be grease flung out of them by design!! Just noticed that center picture, the wear on that ramp looks a little extreme!!

The only thing I did was polish the tranny case that was exposed to the rear of the car!!

Here is the polished case!!

Another thing, paint holds in heat, (I drive my car a lot in 115* temps), so even polishing stops the aluminum from shedding heat, so I didn't polish the front or underside of the case!!

Also, since you have it apart, I welded 1/4" nuts on the tabs (on the swing arm) so I could bolt the skid plate on instead of rivets!! Now mine is removable for maint or cleaning!!

And like Dave said, new shoes and Umax!!

Dave and Mike thanks for the replies.. any recommendations on where to purchase the UMAX spring and new shoes from? About the wear on the sheave..can I smooth out the wear and get the surface down to the same height, or just leave it alone? How about the surface wear the belt runs..it some what pitted and slightly has some light rust on the steel outer half..can the 2 surfaces be polished up?

Here's a place to look up the part numbers. G23A. Then search for the best price. You will find several options...

Dave just a little confused about the spring, on the tnt site the part number is for the stock spring? Umax is an aftermarket spring? Not sure what you mean with the g23a.. sorry for questions..

The Umax is a G23A. The umax spring is longer/stiffer than the stock one. It is an OEM part.
