Default 96 g16 any advise on weather to buy a clone motor or do add ons to stock?

Hey guys picked up a bone stock 96 g16 off a older guy who had purchased it new. Excellent shape and runs great. But I would like more power and torque as I am going to do a lift and 24 or 25 inch tires. What's everyone's options on Vegas carts clone motors? Or doing some plowman performance parts? Which would be best for the most speed and torque? Thanks guys!

I have a lifted 96 g16 cart and replaced my blown motor with a Vegas Cart motor best idea i had ever had!. Fitment was perfect the instructions are well thought out and they stand behind their product. I had the generator bracket break due to having it misadjusted and they set a replacement parts out without questions and at no charge!

In any internal combustion engine key elements are air flow, displacement, peak operating rpms. No magic springs or jetting the carb. Pure hot parameters. I have an early VC 460 with the stock clone cam with 1.3 rockers. With 24" tires I get 40.3 mph at 5200 rpms. The current VC460 would be 50 plus mph at about 6000 rpms. Look at the specs and do the math.

If exhaust noise is a concern, it's hard to quiet a clone down to stock noise level. I've got Plowmans Performance Kit on a G22 and the difference between it and stock is impressive. The Hot Set Up would be even better. It costs nothing to talk to Don, and he won't steer you wrong.

Talking exhaust.Plowman's performance exhaust for a G16 $285. HP increase one.Vegascarts SS header $75.HP increase certainly a lot more than one.For noise reduction with $210 to equal the cost of the plowmans you can certainly buy an ATV muffler that will quiet the VC 460 down.

Not here to bash clones. The Hot Set Up is $499. Includes the muffler, new secondary, mods to your carb and air box, and performance air filter. A lot of bang for the buck. And you maintain the stock platform...

Don has great stuff, just saying I put a stock clone 420 ($300 or less, plus you make mounts or buy) and power is about double stock there is no comparison. You can mod it some but need a better rod to do a lot. Anyway power is much greater speed about the same as stock with no governor, it gets up to speed in half the distance or less. Few mods it will rev more and go faster. I have done a few things to the second clone I did and it ran 30mph stock I have hit 38mph, with 22 tires. The vegas is a built clone it has the rod and better cam and many other parts and makes more power than a 420, revs high, etc. Its twice the price but still a deal for what you get and you don't have to do all the mods on the 420 its all done. Vegas has a lot more top speed also because of all the mods in it, compared to a 420. Should be more reliable with all the better parts, just a good rod is about $150 for a 420 and it is in the 460 already. You can eventually make a 420 run about like a 460 but the 460 has a better block.

Doing a clone is more intensive project for sure, plowmans kit will be much easier to put on I would guess. Though a full kit from Vegas is not near as bad as making all the stuff yourself like I did, but that was before Vegas and I had a welding shop to do it in. Beyond that you get to v-twins, the HF one is cheaper (not much available in mods for it yet but it has piles of torque) otherwise new V-twins cost much more than the Vegas 460 plus any mods to do to them.

Not here to bash plowman's either but the stock engine is 10 hp and after the $500 in mods what are you up to 14hp? And when you look what is actually done to the engine itself ,carb rejet, intake and exhaust tracts improved resulting in a 40% power gain? A 40% gain with tiny little carb , intake and exhausts ports, valves , and cam. That is an engineering miracle.
