g9 rebuild
I have bought a yamaha g9 and the engine is stuck. The previous owner said he was driving it and then it quit. He inspected it and said it looks to be seized up. He owns a golf cart shop so I figure he knows what he is talking about. My question is what should I do about a rebuild for it. I was thinking about buying a new piston and rings and hone it or would you recommend to do a complete rebuild?

Re: g9 rebuild
Welcome!
If it's seized it could be scrap. Disassemble it first, then determine the amount of damage. |

Re: g9 rebuild
I think you'll find professional rebuilds starting at 800.00 with a rebuildable core, a used engine in decent shape would start 400-500 w/o clutch if you could find one. The G9 is a tough little engine that is easy to work on, if you decide to tackle yourself get a service manual first, lots of info you will need to re-build. I would think there are only a couple reasons not to re-build (Block ruined due thrown rod, or camshaft/ counter weight "journals" worn out). The rest of the parts can be found at reasonable prices from site sponsors.

Re: g9 rebuild
I agree with TheNewGuy. You really won't know what your up against until you get it out and take a "hard" look at what has happened. Back in yesteryear a seized engine could be as simple as pooring coke or kero into the spark plug hole{farmers trick for old tractors} and letting it sit. I have had/seen engines that have been a simple fix and have seen the whole engine become completely shot in a flash.
You could start looking around junk yards etc. for parts or even a shot cart with a good engine????????? |

Re: g9 rebuild
If it ends up being shot, I'd big block it.
