G1 bypass pedal?
Hi Guys,
I mentioned in a few posts ago, I got a mid 80's G1. I've never owned a golf cart before but I am semi descent when it comes to mechanics but this one is new for me. I was just made aware that it looks like my gas pedal has been bypassed and when I turn the key to ON or REVERSE either way, the engine fires up, and as soon as I give it gas, we take off. I didnt know this was a issue until I was told that usually when you key on either direction, the engine doesnt fire, until you press the pedal. Its not really a big deal, but does it sound like its bypassed, and if so, why would someone go this way, and do you believe its a hard, or easy fix to replace it back to stock configuration? Its a nice old cart, wouldnt mind throwing a good paint job on it, fixing some of the rusted up panels. I also have a new starter generator on it, but for whatever reason, a few of the wires are missing, and it doesnt seem to work, and have to recharge the battery frequently... but thats a issue for another day... Thanks for your help, and possible opinions and suggestions. -Kyle |

Re: G1 bypass pedal?
Check the switch down by the gas pedal. The wires are probably jumpered together so the engine starts with the key. It's designed to start when you press the gas pedal, but some like the engine to idle all the time...

Re: G1 bypass pedal?
Is it just a regular post style switch? I assume it's as simple as just bolting them together to allow operation like it is now.
Any idea if the pedal switches are still available? |

Re: G1 bypass pedal?
Yeah, it can't charge the battery when it is cranking all the time. The charging system is only working when the rpm's are up a little anyway. They are not originally designed to "idle". I personally don't see any benefit to having them idle, as opposed to have them start when you press the pedal (that is their best gas saving feature). Some can't get used to a system that does not idle like their car does, but golf carts weren't really designed to idle. The point here is, your carts original charging system will never charge the battery while at "idle" only while actually driving it at higher rpms than idle.

Re: G1 bypass pedal?
FWIW: that's why Yamaha charging systems charge the battery so "hot" (higher than a car charges, 15v is common). They planned on you "start, stop, hit a ball, drive 1000 feet stop, hit a ball, start, drive 300 feet, start, stop, start, stop....... Doesn't leave much time for actual battery charging. When people ask" how can I get my Yamaha to charge right", (less than 15v) they don't understand why it is set up as it was. I know this doesn't totally solve your problem, but it's intended to describe how & why it works like it does.

Re: G1 bypass pedal?
I will definitely keep that in mind.
Like I said I don't know much about these but I knew that they usually start and GO when the pedal is pushed, not like a regular car. I will check this out soon. I know there's a wire that's coming off my generator that's not connected to anything and I have no idea where it is suppose to go. I watched the post above about how to test it but I still don't understand fully on how to test it. Maybe one of these days I'll have to have someone with a little patience explain it to me or guide me through it. I don't have the cart near me but if I remember right it's a green wire that's just dangling off the generator. |

Re: G1 bypass pedal?
There are only two components to the charging circuit, the starter / generator and the voltage regulator. If you aren't getting 14.5v or thereabout then it's likely that one of those two components is bad. A big problem with the starters are warn brushes so make sure those are good. VRs simply go bad by their nature. Understand that a big portion of their function is to make eliminate excess voltage created by the generator. As such, although they don't move they wear as if they are moving.
