Default G22 with REAR SEAT ISSUE

Hey guys.

I've installed a Madjax rear flip down seat on my G22. I have the stock G22 top I believe. When you sit in the seat with the (aluminum) stock support brackets, you hit your back on the top support bracket and hit your head on the top. This is NO WAY going to be comfortable for anyone that sits back there.

I've contacted Madjax, but so far, they have no solution to the issue. So, I've come up with a new solution. They sent a set of extra support brackets with the kit, but they are not meant to fix this problem. I am assuming they are for other kinds of tops that would come on a G22.

Anyway, I've re-drilled the holes and mounted them (black support brackets) as you can see in the pictures. I've also lifted the top by 1 1/2 inches to help keep you from hitting your head as you sit in the seat. However, this will require you to add 1 1/2 inches to the front two support studs to level the top. Anyone come up with a better solution?

OK. Madjax got back to me. It appears that the brackets that come with the kit are for newer style G22's. Guess mine is the old style.

No, those black bars are for when you use a long top.

Oh, they didn't change styles of the G22 top? Gotcha. OK.

Well, anyway, here is my solution for any of you that do this in the future. I've used those extra support brackets that came in the rear seat kit, which are as Block says above for a longer top. Attached the top with four 3/8 bolts with washers through the tops of the brackets. Attached the bottom of the brackets to the inside of the seat frame (they supply you with the bolts, nuts and washers). You'll have to drill out four 3/8" holes on the lower brackets, once you figure out what height you want the top to be. I went 1 1/2 inches higher than the standard top height.

Then, I found carriage bolts that fit the stock mounts under the cowl. You'll have to switch to standard, but they will fit the 10mm holes without tearing up the stock threads. Just for security, I added thread locker to the carriage bolt head that goes into the hole. They were good and tight. Then, added four nuts to each one, then bolted them into the existing front holes, and cut off the top of the carriage bolt, once screwed in. Back off the nuts to clean up your threads, and set the nuts to match the original bolt heights, but about 1 1/2 inches higher, until the top is level and match on both sides.

You don't have to do this, but I ended up using a thin blade with the grinder and cut straight across the old plastic mounts. I left the top bolt hole with a little plastic below it, just in case you MUST put the old mounts back on (if you remove the rear seat). Probably not going to be near as strong, but those old plastic mounts hit you in the head if you leave them in the top, and look terrible.

Overall I really like it, as anyone sitting in the rear seat will be comfortable and not hitting their head on the top and their back on the stock mounts. The top is more solid than it was with the stock mounts side to side, but maybe not as strong front to back. This can be be solved by adding angle brackets to the rear mounts. Probably not necessary, but then again, I always over build everything!

Well it looks like you figured it out and did a nice job. We can always find ways to improve on factory or aftermarket setups.

Jim, just a suggestion, use some steel or aluminum "colar's" to support the windshield frame to the main frame. Heck, you could cut the rear bar's you took off for them.

I think that would be strong enough in a general sense. The only thing you may want to think about is taking the roof off in the winter if it's going to be outside. The original supports had those 90 degree brackets on them whereas your new ones don't. The new ones probably would't be able to take as much snow weight as the originals.

That's a good idea Block. Not sure if the rubber rings would fit that tho.
