G2/G9 speed increase
Hello....I am new to the forum & I have been lurking around the forum recently trying to find out as much as I could about golf carts. I just purchased my first golf cart (1992 Yamaha) & I was looking at increasing the speed. The seller says it is a G2, but with a search of the Serial number, it appears to be a G9. All the reading has helped me, but it gets so overwhelming that it starts to become confusing & was looking for a little help to make sure I do it correctly, since I am by far not the best mechanic out there!
The cart is already lifted (5or 6"?) & has 20" tires on it. I am going to keep the stock engine (which was rebuilt a couple of years ago), but like to get a little more speed out of the cart. From what I have read, the quickest & easiest way would be an adjustment of the governor by turning the 10mm nut on the threaded rod. Do I turn it clockwise & how much do I want to turn it without over-doing it? I also read that replacing the governor speed spring to also gain a few more mph? If I do one or the other or both, what kind of mph increase could I expect? If I did these smaller modifications, would I have to do any others? Thanks for the help! Re: G2/G9 speed increase
Of course, just don't go full throttle down long hills

Re: G2/G9 speed increase
What are some of the pros/cons of doing the governor mod (zip tie spring or drilling out bracket so shaft spins freely) compared to completely bypassing governor with a new throttle cable straight to the carb?

Re: G2/G9 speed increase
drilling out the arm and connecting throttle straight to carb would essentially the same thing crank the 10mm nut all the way down this will increase speed a by a good amount hard to tell how much mph gain you will get your taller tires will give you more top end speed tightening the nut is safer than just bypassing the governor but still have to watch what youre doing down hills

Re: G2/G9 speed increase
If you crank the nut down or zip tie trick, the governor is still functional. Just gives you more speed with governor still operational. You can do the spring flip trick, governor still works, and 1 or 2 more mph than cranked/zip tied. Notice how spring lever is "flipped" around to the other side where the carb cable is, that's max speed while retaining governor function.

Re: G2/G9 speed increase
ok...I took the cart for a spin tonight before I did anything & the GPS clocked 12.2 mph. So I tightened the governor nut (clockwise) all the way & took it for another run. I didn't gain any speed (12.2 mph still) & it even ran a little rougher. Why wouldn't I have an increase in speed after doing the governor modification?

Re: G2/G9 speed increase
Any ideas/suggestions?
I did a little more digging on several things after reading some old posts & this is what I found: Belt only measures 1 1/16, so I will definately get a new belt. Was looking at the Severe Duty double cog. Took off cover of the primary clutch & inspected. No broken weights or links & everything is clean & tight. Lubed the grease fitting. Primary clutch sheave has a little wear, but NO holes. Secondary clutch sheave has no wear. Inspected the backside of the secondary clutch, one of the plastic pads is missing on the ramp. Not sure if this effects anything? Hoping to find my problem so I can get a little more speed. Once I can figure this out, I would like to get the umax spring to install on it.
