belt length
I'm a recently retired mechanic trying to help out our local club by volunteering to work on their carts. This is my 1st foray into golf carts so I'm learning as I go. There is an older yamaha that was donated minus any paperwork or manuals. Some people feel it's a G1 but no one is sure. The problem I'm having is drive belt length. The belt on it seems too long to me. If I squeeze the belt together between the 2 pulleys I can touch both halves together. Is that normal on a yamaha? All the other carts are club cars so I have nothing to compare to. It's a belt meant for...I believe...G2 and up? 39 and a bit inches. I tried to put a belt on for a G1 (36") and there was no way I was getting that on. Is there a VIN on that machine that I'm unable to find so far? -Thanks

Re: belt length
Correct belt for G2 through G22 is Yamaha part number "J55-g6241". Correct belt for any 2 stroke (G1 & G3 were 2 stroke) Yamaha is "J10-46241"

Re: belt length
If you can squeeze the belt together, that's normal. Belt gets tight when running.

Re: belt length
cgtech....Thanks for the info . It can't be a G1 then because it's a 4 stroke and therefore the belt that's on it is the right one. It's a Dayco belt but matches to the J55.
Golf cart guy...I understand how the system works. The only other carts I have for reference though are club cars and the drive belts on them are a long way from being able to touch the 2 halves together. That's why I wondered if it was too long. |

Re: belt length
A new belt is 1 3/16" wide, and will come to the top of the secondary sheaves. When squeezed, the belt halves will almost touch.

Re: belt length
Thanks Dave in VA. I'll physically measure the width. The Dayco # is supposedly that width. The cart runs ok. I was just curious because the belt has so much more slack than the club car belt.
Thanks to all for your replies. As i said in my original post I'm trying to learn things as I go and with your help I'm doing just that! And yes.."Knowledge is good" |
