Getting started on my G2 build
I just picked up a 1990 Yamaha G2 cart. It has been sitting for awhile but did run before it was put away. It is in pretty bad shape.
My plans for it is to keep it very simple for now. Get it running, new tires, lift kit, recover seats and paint it black and grey. I just put it up on jack stands and changed the oil. The oil looked very good for being in there and sitting as long as it did. I also drained the little fuel that was left in the tank, that didn't look good. The gas tank looks to be modified with a fuel gauge and there is a filter, looks like a oil filter for an ATV, on the bottom drain/feed of the tank. It looks like it was glued in there as most of it just fell apart. There is a thick sludge in the bottom of the tank also. It had front and rear lights but looked like there were put on but the previous owner as they were wired to everything and anything. I completely removed all of the lights, the horn and the wiring for now. I'll have to get a light kit later on. I'm trying to figure out if I should try to clean the tank out or just get a new one. I did search a little online and didn't see any place to buy fuel tanks. Any advice on cleaning it out or would you just replace it? I'll update this thread with pictures as soon as I make some room in the garage. Thanks Herb |

Re: Getting started on my G2 build...Now with pics.
Here are some pics.
As you can see from the gas tank it looks to be modifidied with a gauge. I have it soaking now to see if I can clean it up. Spending $250+ right now for a new tank and not know what other problems I will run into is not something I want to do. I removed the driver side tire and the wheel bearing are ok, it is the tie rod that is bent and there is movement in the pin that links it too the a-arm. After reading through the paint section I'm thinking about spraying it with truck bedliner, maybe see if I can get black and grey. I'm ordering a tune up kit tonight and hopefully I can get it running soon. This weekend I plan to remove the carb and clean it up, along with the air box. I do want ask where I can get some dirt tires that will fit the stock rims? I want to see which would be the better route price wise to powder coat the stockers or get a wheel and tire package. I'm going to build this up slow but will try to post alot of pics of progress. Thanks |

Re: Getting started on my G2 build
That cart looks like me and bruised but still going. It looks solid and the engine is clean. Go at it slow, look around, You will see a lot of doody doos that will work on the cart without spending a lot of money. For now take the tank out hose it out and clean it, pounder was talking about the stock filter in the tank, dump it for a in line filter from the auto parts store. if the gague is shot a small expansion plug will plug the hole, no way would I buy a new tank unless you are restoring it But what do I know.

Thanks. Yeah I don't like the filter they use in the tank. The one that was in there just fell apart. I haven't tried to get the rest out but looks likes like the previous owner glued it in there. I already have the tank out and soaking it. I agree if I was to strip this cart down to a frame then I would buy a new tank, right now I just want to get it up and running. |

Re: Getting started on my G2 build
Cruddy and varnish gas can be removed with laquer thinner easily. Just get a gallon and it will clean op the old paint as well as gas!

Thanks for the tip...I'll look to do that if it doesn't come clean from the soaking. |
