G16 Motor Rebuild? Or Valve Seals?
Alright so the cart I'm working on runs and drives great and has all of its power that I can tell. But when you haven't drove it in a day it starts smoking. Sometimes pretty bad. But after you drive it a while it clears up.
I'd like to drive it like this for a while but want to fix the smoke. Is it in need of rebuild or is it the valve seals? I'm not familiar with the JN6. Much further down the road I planned to put this in it http://www.ebay.com/itm/25HP-BIG-BLO...NXgqKS&vxp=mtr |

Well, the valve seal & valve cover gasket is something like $15. Can be done without tearing the head off or anything like that. The rope trick works great to keep the valve from dropping into the hole (jam a bunch of rope in the spark plug hole, but not all the rope ).

So under the valve cover is the valve easy to get to? Haven't worked on a small engine before. I used a compression tester on a car and pumped air into it to keep the valves up while doing seals lol. Any special tools? Spring compressor?

Re: G16 Motor Rebuild? Or Valve Seals?
Probably time for a rebuild if it has never been done on your motor. I recently bought a G16 with the same problem. Ended up replacing the rings, lapped the valves, and new seals. Cost 130 in parts and is not hard to do if you're are familiar with small engines. I needed to buy a clutch removal tool though.
If you're going to just replace the intake valve seal (exhaust side does not have a seal) you don't need a spring compressor, just push down on the retaining disk and turn a quarter turn. |

Re: G16 Motor Rebuild? Or Valve Seals?
I just drove it down my road after not driving it for 2 days and hardly any smoke at all. Blah!
I may just end up swapping the 25hp in sooner than expected. Not sure if I need that much power though it already gets a little touchy at top end of this motor lol |

Yamaha "ring free" helps on motors that aren't screwed.

Re: G16 Motor Rebuild? Or Valve Seals?
In the yamaha the oil ring likes to wear out first, so it smokes and burns oil. Long as you keep oil in it you can keep driving and they run good usually. But eventually they smoke a lot or foul the plug often, or someone forgets the oil and runs it out. Like was said usually you can ring it the first time, after that it needs a rebuild or swap.
