Default G1 sputters when given gas

I have a 83 gas G1 that runs ok some times and others will not take gas. It spits and sputters all the time until warm which takes some time. Then about half the time even after it warms up it won't take gas and spits and sputters when you give some.
I have checked the seals and used starting fluid to see if lower unit or vacuum lines leaking.
I have dumped the fuel (running 80-1) put new gas filter on. Took the carb apart and cleaned.
Checked the compression. Which is 75.
Line to exhaust disconnected and plugged. Lines to oil pump plugged.

Checked for loose wires.

Im at a loss.

Thanks

I have changed plugs. Did foul one before I got the oil mix right. But now plug is burning with a light brown color and dry.
I thought 75lb was a little low but would think would run the same after warmed up all the time. Not hit and miss on running right.

Nah, 75 is too low and will get you the exact symptoms like you are experiencing; an erratic running engine. It'll be ok here and there but the downward spiral is inevitable.

You need a new piston and rings at minimum. If it were me I would just go ahead and do the whole top end as you are going to have it apart anyway but that's just me.

Lochlin: when you say you would do the whole top end what do you mean? New jug and all?

Cheaper to buy over sized piston and have local machine shop bore it out rather than buying the "kit"

Have rebuilt numerous g1s doing this and it's about half what the kit cost just have to pull it apart and find out what sized piston you have and get next sized bigger

I take it then that the gaskets can be ordered separate? I have found a top end kit with piston and rings, jug, wrist pin and gaskets for $209 on ebay.

Yeah can order individual gaskets when I did mine piston was 50ish and machine shop charged 70 toss in couple gaskets and shipping you're looking at $150 and keeping oem cylinder witch is way better off than Chinese jugs

I have found a mach shop that will do the jug for $85. $69 for oversized piston rings and gaskets from ebay. $159 So you are not far off on price. Thanks for the info.
