Default Yamaha G2 clutch concern

I recently purchased a Yamaha G2 and it runs great on flat grounds but barely makes up any hills. Read that one or both of the clutches could be the issue. Wondering if there is one or the other clutch that people replace first...the main clutch or the secondary clutch. Any thoughts on this?

thanks for any and all help/advice

IMHO, it is not so simple... You should investigate and find the real reason, it can come from several factors!

One thing that can be very helpful here is to post some pics of the clutches and the engine bay.

Here are a couple of photos of the motor and secondary clutch. Not sure the year of this golf cart but the number on it is #J38.022972. Hopefully you can see the photos.

Start it up in nuetral and floor it belt should sink to the bottom of primary clutch (motor) and come to the top of secondary clutch (transaxle) report back with results

could be a few things i wouldn't run out a buy any thing until you check out a few things, check the width of the belt, should be 1 3/16", the rear spring might be weak or broke, a video of it running will tell us how its working.

Can't see all of the air box, but looks like one strap is missing. Unhook the airbox hose from the carb and fold it out of the way and see how it runs. Could be as easy as the airbox not sealed right.

Even with a dog motor, it can still climb a hill, if the clutches are in good shape. It looks like you have the original spring seat, which leads me to believe it likely also has the original (almost 30 year old spring). If the rear clutch isnt in top shape, it will drive miserably on a hill. I think if it were me, I would order a UMAX spring, disassemble rear clutch, check the sliding portion for wobble, and replace the spring and any other worn parts. A stock G2 with stock wheels , and a UMAX spring will climb really well (for the limited traction offered by golf tires). 90508-45849 is the UMAX spring part number.

I believe the spring is a good place to start because both clutches appear to be working properly as I give it gas.
