Default Is it better to buy a cart with a newly rebuilt motor or one that's original?

I'm looking at yamaha golf carts and one the dealer said has been freshly rebuilt. He said it was smoking a little and needed rings so he had his guy rebuild it.

Is that better or worse than going with one that has an original motor? I know with cars it could mean it wasn't taken care of. I'm not sure about it with golf carts.

If it was done right I wouldn't worry about it over all condition of the cart generally tells you everything you need to know if it's been abused or not

Is there anything I can look for, to make sure it was done right? Other than odd noise, smoke, or low oil?

Its about anyone's guess either way.

I would do a compression test, new tight engine should be 160-175

If its below 150 I would count on rebuilding it in the future.

I would also ask for paper work on what was done, Just rings? or complete job. pistons, rods, valves etc.

If the rings go like they usually do, the oil ring goes and they burn oil and smoke but run ok. You do not want to see or smell any oil smoke from them and normally will not. It generally means it has that many hours on it to wear out the rings. You can toss rings in and hone it but it has that wear on it, really a rebuild would be to bore it and new piston oversize then you have a new bore and it will run like new. Honed engines unless somewhat new will often burn oil the bore is too big its worn out. So a rings job is really a bandaid job. Normally if you bore one you put new bearings/seals and stuff in too.

It all depends on the price you are paying. If its an older cart odds are it need rebuild or has been.

Mine started smoking and I put a clone engine in it, was the best thing I ever did. It has twice the power and twice the fun. But I use my cart offroad mostly so it really helps. I had less in the new engine and parts than a rebuilt short block from the dealer at $600 back then. Did take a while to do the swap though, no kits back then.

Would a compression test give a indication if it had only a ring job?

A clarification on the compression as it's different for the 2 stroke G1. Good compression on those is around 120 psi.

A compression test can only tell whether the cylinder, piston, and rings are in good shape.

I am not sure. I assume you are looking at 4 stroke carts. If it does not smoke now it will be ok for a while. If they rebuilt the whole thing a bore job then that is much better. I am not sure how you find out what they did, a full rebuild is worth more is what I mean. Even if you buy a different cart how do you know what has been done. I bought mine as a GC trade in at a dealer when it was 7 yr old so I figure it was all original. They had like 60 of them all traded in and we picked ours. They were not personally owned they all had numbers on them.
